2008 Heisman Trophy Betting Odds
By 5dimes.com
The NCAA wrapped up the final week of their season much the same way the first three months played out with a healthy dose of shocking upsets, impressive performances from Heisman hopefuls and head-scratching coaching decisions. But why would we expect anything else?
The upsets refereNCed above led to an unusually dramatic unveiling of the BCS bowl matchups, as West Virginia and Mizzou crapped the you know what. Both teams were set to play for the National Championship if they could just survive the final Game of the season with a win and both lost, throwing the entire NCAA world into a frenzy.
But the Bowl matchups have been set, the lines are up and bettors are taking their shots early. You can see all the matchups and lines at 5dimes.com
In addition to the Bowl Games, another bit of business to be wrapped up in the college ranks is handing out the Heisman award. The Heisman Trophy finalists were annouNCed on Wednesday and they iNClude Floridas Tim Tebow, Arkansas Darren McFadden, Mizzous Chase Daniel and Hawaiis Colt Brennan.
The wagering action on who will win has been steady, with the early volume backing the odds on favorite Tim Tebow. Hes currently listed at -1000 at 5dimes.com and seeing a little over 60% of all the Heisman betting action.
Tebow was also No. 1 in SCripps Howards season ending Heisman Trophy poll, a survey that has correctly called 16 out of the last 19 trophies awarded. If the Florida QB does take it, he would be the first sophomore to take home the prestigious award.
Who else on the Heisman list is receiving attention? Arkansas Darren McFadden is number two for bettors so far. It might seem like déjà vu all over again for McFadden and it will be if he fails to win it this year. Last year the Razorbacks RB was also finalist along with Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn and Ohio State QB Troy Smith (who ended up taking the honor).
McFadden, who is listed with odds of +400, has almost 20% of the Heisman action.
Sitting behind the two frontrunners is a pair of QBs listed at +2000.
Missouri pivot Chase Daniel mightve been mentioned in the same breath with McFadden and Tebow, but when the Tigers lost a crucial Big 12 title Game to Oklahoma and Daniel failed to lead his team to victory, or a TD pass for that matter, his Heisman chase effectively ended.
Playing at Hawaii is both the clichéd blessing and curse. On one hand you put up very respectable numbersin Colt Brennans case 4,522 passing yards; 71.4 completion percentage; 41 TD passes and a 166.31 QB ratingbut on the other hand everyone credits head coach June Jones offensive system rather than the player.
Bettors appear to feel Brennan has a decent shot at taking the award home, as he is getting an impressive amount of action from the betting public.
The winner will be annouNCed this coming Saturday so if you want to throw down a wager on the outcome at 5dimes.com you still have time.
Poinsettia Bowl
We are now two weeks away from the first bowl Game kicking off, the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl featuring a matchup between the Utah Utes and Navy Midshipmen on December 20, 2007.
While both Utah and Navy sport identical 8-4 records straight up, it is the Utes that have been more profitable for the bettor in 2007, currently sitting with an ATS record of 7-5, while the Midshipmen are a meager 4-7 ATS. The Utes are listed as the favorite by 8½-points and the total set at 67.
However, the underdog Navy is the team bettors are tabbing as an early profit-play. They have received 85% of the wagering activity so far at 5dimes.com
In their last Four Bowl Game trips Navy owns a 3-1 ATS record while Utah is a perfect 4-0 with Navy covering as an 8-point dog in a 25-24 loss to Boston College last year in the Meineke Bowl
Next Thursday we will list a handful of winning trends for the bowl matchups, as well as look at where the bettors are putting their money.
