Oklahoma –20.5 @ Washington
The No. 3 ranked Oklahoma Sooners travel to Seattle to take on the
0-2 Washington Huskies in a non-conference match-up. The Sooners
have out-scored their two opponents this season by a combined total
of 109-28. The last game was a 26 pt drubbing of a pretty good
Cincinnati Bearcat team. Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford put up an
astounding 395 yds passing and 5 TD’s in that one, completing 29 of
38 for a 13.6 YPC average. The Sooners were also able to churn out
197 yds on the ground for a total offensive showing of almost 600
yds. The Sooner defense held the Bearcats to well under 100 yds
rushing, as Cincinnati was forced to air it out to try and keep up,
and still held them under 250 passing yds and just 19 offensive pts.
Six of those points were in garbage time though as the Bearcats
scored their last TD as time expired, missing the 2-point
conversion. Cincinnati also scored on a 96 yd kick-off return.
Washington got mauled in their season opener at Oregon by a final
score of 44-10. They were able to keep it close for a awhile, going
into HT down just 14-10, before falling apart in the second half and
giving up 4 more TD’s and a FG. Oregon burned them with a pretty
balanced attack in piling up over 250 yds on the ground and almost
250 more through the air, for a total offensive output of almost 500
yds. For Washington, QB Jake Locker was held to just 12 completions
out of 28 attempts for a meager 103 yds passing before giving way to
backup Ronnie Fouch in garbage time. In all, the Huskies were able
to generate just 242 yds of total offense.
Although Washington played BYU a little tougher last week in only
losing by a single point, they did get out-played by more than the
score would indicate. QB Locker was again very mediocre in barely
completing 50% of his 32 pass attempts for just 204 yds and 1 TD.
The Huskies did manage 133 yds on the ground, but nearly half of
that was from Locker scrambles. For the second game in a row,
Washington gave up big yardage as BYU torched them for 338 yds
through the air , and another 137 on the ground. The game may not
have been as close had BYU not fumbled at the Husky goal line on
their first 4th Q drive. The Huskies suffered a few injuries in the
BYU game as they lost multi-purpose threat RB/WR Chris Polk for the
season (shoulder), two starters in the secondary, S Darin Harris and
S Jason Wells, as well as backup S Victor Aiyewa. Starting
Cornerback Byron Davenport is also listed as doubtful. Both teams
are looking at bye weeks next week, so no major conflicts or look-aheads
to worry about.
Oklahoma should be able to shred this defense, which has given up 72
pts and almost 1000 yds of offense in just 2 games. Washington
should also be a little emotionally drained after starting the
season with a huge conference game against rival Oregon, and then
coming so close against BYU, and the weird circumstances involved in
the last seconds of that game. The Sooners should be on their toes
and not wanting a repeat of last year’s first competitive road test
at Colorado, where they took the Buffaloes for granted and lost
outright as a huge favorite. A lot of people will point to that game
last year, as well many others going back several years, where the
Sooners managed to just squeak by on the road. But they did beat a
pretty potent Tulsa team on the road last year by 41 pts and they
did beat an awesome Missouri team by 21 at a neutral site. And many
of those other results were pre- Sam Bradford, who now enters his
second full year as starting QB and should be more comfortable in
road starts. This is a potent offensive and defensive team who has
blown out 2 opponents so far, and whose players and coaching staff
are still not satisfied with the overall play. That means we’ll have
a hungry and focused team facing a much lesser team, who is dinged
up and may be ripe for a letdown.
Also, Washington has not been the best bet as a home team
historically anyway, as they are just 12-27-2 ATS in their last 41
home games. I think Oklahoma wins by at least 4 TD’s in this one,
something in the range of 45-17.
