Cincinnati
Bengals -1.5 @ Baltimore Ravens
9/7/08
The Bengals have been pretty disappointing since going 11-5 to win
the division 3 yrs ago. Since then they are a combined 15-17. Last
year they averaged a respectable 23.75 pts per game in going 7-9 SU
and ATS, but also gave up an average of 32 pts per game in their 9
losses. They’ve still got the makings of a great offense with
playmakers like Carson Palmer, Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmanzadeh.
And they’ve got two good RB’s in Rudi Johnson and Kenny Watson.
Watson filled in admirably when Johnson went down last year, piling
up over 1100 all-purpose yds and scoring 7 TD’s. On defense, new
coordinator Mike Zimmer will be implementing a new defensive scheme
which will include players like 1st round draft choice LB Keith
Rivers (USC), 3rd round pick 320 lb DT Pat Simms (Auburn) and free
agent signing DE Antwan Odom, who has 8 sacks for the Titans last
year.
The Baltimore Ravens were equally disappointing last year, finishing
at 5-11 SU and just 3-13 ATS. They averaged just barely over 17 pts
per game, and their once proud defense was pretty average in giving
up an average of 24. The offense managed to score just 24 TD’s the
entire year. Carson Palmer had 2 more than that just passing. The
Ravens only won 4 home games and they were against teams like the
Jets, Arizona, St Louis and a season ending victory vs the Steelers
who were without Willie Parker, and resting players like Ben
Roethlisberger and Hines Ward as they had already secured the
division. They have gone from having an experienced head coach in
Brian Billick to rookie John Harbaugh, and may even start a rookie
QB.
Despite the problems the Bengals had last year, they still beat the
Ravens twice. In fact, the Bengals are 5-1 vs. the Ravens since 2005
and have won 6 of the last 7 matchups overall. It appears that the
Bengals have taken the greater strides in the off-season and I would
expect them to get the win here as a pick-em, even though the game
is in Baltimore.
