Boston College vs Virginia Tech in Huge ACC Football Matchup

Boston College has gotten the best of Virginia Tech the past two years during
the regular season, but both years Virginia Tech has gotten the last laugh in
the ACC title game. Both teams look poised for a return visit against each other
in the ACC Title game, but first both teams are looking for revenge this
Saturday. After suffering a season opening loss to #3 ranked Alabama, Virginia
Tech has turned it on and is 4-0 since that game with wins over Nebraska and
Miami. They are in the driver’s seat to win the ACC Coastal Division, and are
still in the National Title hunt. If they want to keep those dreams alive they
need to take care of business this Saturday, but beating this Boston College
team will not be an easy task. The Eagles are 4-1 on the year with their lone
loss coming at the hands of a tricky Clemson team. They are coming into this
game off a very emotional win over Florida State. This Boston College team has a
bad taste in their mouth after losing back to back years to Virginia Tech in the
ACC Title game, and what better way to get revenge then to ruin Virginia Tech’s
National Title hopes?
VIRGINIA TECH’S KEY TO VICTORY
This Virginia Tech rushing attack has found its work horse in Redshirt Freshman
Ryan Williams. In Virginia Tech’s beating of Miami Ryan Williams rushed for 150
yards and 2 TDs, and for the season he has accounted for 8 of the Hokies TDs.
Most importantly he takes pressure off of QB Tyrod Taylor and his arm. Taylor is
not the most efficient QB, but he plays much better when he has a running game
to set up the play action pass. If Virginia Tech is going to keep this hot
streak going they have got to establish the run like they have been with Ryan
Williams and Tyrod Taylor.
BOSTON COLLEGE’S KEY TO VICTORY
This Boston College team gets the job done on the defensive side of the ball.
This Eagle defense is #1 in the ACC in scoring only allowing 15 points per game,
and is 4th in the ACC in total defense allowing just 294 yards per game. The
good news for Boston College is the strength of their defense is their front
seven and stopping the run. They are only allowing 101 yards rushing per game.
The way to beat this Boston College defense is through the air and that is not
something Virginia Tech is known for. I expect them to stack the box and commit
to stopping Ryan Williams and this Hokie rushing attack, and force Tyrod Taylor
to beat them with his arm. If they are able to get to Tyrod Taylor and get him
to make some mistakes they are more than capable of pulling the upset.
THE FINAL VERDICT
Virginia Tech has been one of the hottest teams in the country the past few
weeks. With wins over Nebraska and Miami they have shown they are a legit
National Title contender, but if we have learned one thing in these past few
weeks it is no one is safe from getting upset. Virginia Tech is going to have to
get Ryan Williams the ball early and often and try to wear down this stingy
Boston College defense. If Virginia Tech’s offensive line is able to win the
battle in the trenches and open up holes for Williams this Hokie team will
continue their winning ways, but if this Boston College defense has the same
success it has had all year with stopping the run I don’t believe Tyrod Taylor
has the ability to beat them on his own with his arm, and Boston College will
get their 3rd straight win over Virginia Tech in the regular season.
The feeling here is that the number is a bi thigh. Sure, when it's counted most, in the title games the last two years, Va Tech has won convincingly, by 18 and 14. Boston College has also played a few more cream puffs than Va Tech this year and to top it off, Va Tech is at home. All worth taking into consideration here, but we can't pass up what may be two touchdowns by kickoff. Boston College +13.5
