Boise State vs Hawaii Betting Line and Prediction

10/24/09

The Boise State Broncos opened up at 4th in the BCS Rankings and should be well on their way to a BCS Bowl provided they avoid a major slip up. That slip could come against the high octane offense of the Hawaii Warriors this week; but I wouldn’t count on it. The Warriors are a whopping 24.5 point dog, and admittedly they are not very good. However, anything can happen out on the gridiron. Boise State last defeated Tulsa, but had to work for it. Tulsa returned to lose to the lowly Miners of UTEP. Hawaii has dropped four straight, but will boast home field advantage.

The Boise State Broncos are the definition of consistency. They win year in and year out. They started this year off with a defense orientated 19-8 win over the Ducks of Oregon. The Ducks have turned out to be a very good team since then, so we know the Broncos can hang with the best of them, even though that win did come over their “smurf turf”. Boise State started the year off blowing opponents out, but recently has stumbled just a bit. They were only able to beat Tulsa by 7 points, and before that only beat lowly UC Davis 34-16. They need to get things rolling again against a Hawaii team that they are capable of blowing out of the water.

Boise State’s offense depends on QB Kellen Moore. The sophomore has thrown for 1,404 yards and 16 TDs so far this year. He is doing extremely well considering that he is still an underclassman. Jeremy Avery and Doug Martin have been the most reliable runners, combining for 818 yards and 5 TDs. The defense is where the Broncos really shine. They are giving up just 15.5 PPG overall, but are giving up 23 when playing on the road. The defense is very good, but needs to get back to playing the way that they are capable of doing. Hawaii isn’t a very good team, but they do have a nice offense. Pitching a shutout would do good things for their perception.

The Hawaii Warriors find themselves on a 4 game skid after starting the year a perfect 2-0. They have been playing a lot of games on the road, getting blown out by Louisiana Tech, and narrowly losing to UNLV. The Warriors were embarrassed by Fresno State 42-17 in Hawaii. This team has to get back to what they do best; throwing the ball. If the offensive line gives Greg Alexander time to sling that football, then they will put points on the board. The Warriors also need for the defense to stop falling apart. They are giving up way to many points and costing their team games. For an offense that is averaging 443.2 yards per game, there is no excuse for the Warriors to not be getting more points on the score board.

When Hawaii beat Washington State QB Greg Alexander passed for 453 yards and 3 TDs. He was nearly flawless that night. Alexander had a similar type of day statistically speaking in Hawaii’s loss to UNLV. The only difference is that he threw an INT in that game. He has to avoid giving up turnovers, because the defense can’t keep points off the board. Alexander also needs help from the running game, so that he can change things up and keep the defense off balance. Playing at home will be an advantage for Hawaii, but they will have to bring it all together if they hope to down the beast that is Boise State.

These teams are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Nobody likes to admit that teams run up scores in college football, but it's a fact of life. Why do they do it? They do it for the pollsters. Scoring 70 points gets alot more votes in the polls than scoring 28 and just squeaking by. Boise should score early and often in this one. We're going to lay the big number here. Boise in a romp! Boise State -24.5
