BYU has been through ups and downs this season. They opened the season with a shocking 14-13 win over #3 Oklahoma. Everyone was curious to see if this was the year when a non BCS conference team could finally fight its way into the BCS title game. Then all the hype and excitement came to a sudden and stunning halt. Florida State came into Lavell Edwards Stadium and took it to BYU from start to finish. Florida State dominated BYU and got the 54-28 victory.
BYU’s chance at a national title is now gone, but they are still playing for a
berth in a major BCS bowl game, and if that is going to happen they need to get
back in a rhythm this Saturday against a very dangerous Utah State team. Utah
State opened their season with two tough losses to quality opponents. In their
first game they loss to rival Utah 35-17 then followed that up with a loss to
Texas A&M 38-30. After a win over Southern Utah they come into this game 1-2,
and are hoping to earn a berth into a bowl game. A win over a team like BYU is
just what this Utah State team needs to get things going again.
BYU’S KEY TO VICTORY
It is no secret what BYU likes to do as an offense. They want to put up points
and fast through the air. BYU comes into this game averaging 433 total yards per
game, and 322 of those yards come through the passing game. BYU Senior QB Max
Hall knows this offense very well and you expect him to get the green light to
throw up and down the field at will against this Utah State defense that has
given up 30+ points in every game this season. If this BYU offense is able get
in a rhythm like its capable Utah State will not be able to keep up with on the
scoreboard, and it will be a long night for the Utah State defense.
UTAH STATE’S KEY TO VICTORY
This Utah State offense runs a very balanced attack that’s ranked 8th in the
country in total yards with 489 yards. They are averaging 291 yards passing and
222 yards rushing. Utah State put up over 500 yards of total offense against a
solid Texas A&M team. In that game QB Diondre Borel went 24/47 for 334 yards and
1 TD, and RB Robert Turbin rushed the ball 13 times for 121 yards and 1 TD. That
is the kind of production Utah State is looking for this Friday. This BYU
defense is very vulnerable to giving up points and yards, and if Utah State has
another one of its big games on offense they can make this a competitive game.
THE FINAL VERDICT
This BYU team went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. It is very
possible that they just weren’t able to produce with the expectations so high
for their team. BYU has a great coach in Bronco Mendenhall and you can bet he
has this BYU team back on track for the rest of this season. I am sure their
goal coming into this season was a berth in a BCS bowl game, and they are still
very much in the hunt for that. This BYU team is lead by their Senior QB Max
Hall. He has been through it all as the BYU QB, and he will have this BYU team
believing that this season is not lost, and I expect BYU to come out and play
inspired football and make a statement against this Utah State team.
From a betting standpoint though, we have to pass. Utah State has been putting some points on the board which makes them very dangerous dog at +24 or more. Their losses to Utah and Texas AM were by 17 and 8 points. BYU may blow them off the field but it's simply too many points for us to get involved with. The total may be worth a look. at 65, the over may have some value as both of these teams can light it up.
