Duke Travels to West Point to Take On Army - Vegas Says it's a Toss Up
9/12/09
Week one in college football is in the books and we have had some surprises
like the Oklahoma Sooners losing both their Heisman quarterback in Sam Bradford
and their tight end Jermaine Gresham to injury and falling to the BYU Cougars,
but then there were games that ended just like expected with both the USC
Trojans and the number one Florida Gators just destroying their week one
opponents.
Even though Army and the Duke Blue Devils aren’t going to be playing in a big
time bowl game anytime soon, they still have a game to play this Saturday on
Army’s home field in Michie Stadium at West Point.
The season started off poorly once again for the Blue Devils as they dropped
their opener against Richmond 16-24. There aren’t many positives that came out
of this game for Duke besides the fact that they do have a solid offensive
attack through the air with quarterback Thaddeus Lewis behind center.
Lewis threw for 350 yards and two touchdowns in the loss against the Richmond
Spiders in front of the largest Duke crowd since 2001 with 33,311 in attendance.
Even though Lewis was on his game and threw the football 55 times in this
contest, the Blue Devils just couldn’t get anything else going against the
Spiders of Richmond and dropped to 0-1 on the season.
The Army Black Knights on the other hand had a very promising start to the
season as they did something that they hadn’t done since way back in 1996 by
winning their season opener away from home 27-14 over the Eastern Michigan
Eagles.
The Blue Devils may have a potent passing game with Thaddeus Lewis taking the
snaps, but they will without doubt have their work cut out for them against the
Black Knights on Saturday with Army’s season debut on their home field at West
Point.
The line on this game has been flip flopping with both teams having been favored
by a point at one time this week. The game currently sits at pk at most
sportsbooks, so
we're just being asked to pick a winner here. Despite the different fortunes of
these two a week ago, we're going to back Duke in this spot. They improved by
leaps and bounds a year ago, actually becoming a competitive team. Neither of
these teams are world beaters. A year ago Duke managed to beat Navy 41-31 while
Army was blanked by Navy 34-0. That's about as far as we can go when trying to
determine a talent level here.
We simply expect to see Duke continue to improve and if that's going to
happen, they're going to have to get by the likes of Army.
