Georgetown vs.
Villanova
2/28/09
The Georgetown Hoyas might be down and out of the race for the Big
East title with a 5-10 record in conference play, but the Villanova
Wildcats are still alive and could make a strong push in the final
games of the season to shock some of the top teams in the
conference.
The Hoyas started out strong and at one point were in the Top 25
standings. There big win over the UConn Huskies seemed like a sign
of things to come this season, but it has really only ended up being
the highlight to a very disappointing season.
After the win over UConn the Hoyas just headed into an ugly downward
spiral. First it was losing two straight to Big East conference
heavyweights in the Pittsburgh Panthers and Notre Dame. They did
rebound slightly from their disappointing losses by beating both
Providence and Syracuse in consecutive games, but then they just
fell apart by losing nine of the next 11 games.
There is a slight chance that Georgetown could make a run at the
tournament, but highly unlikely now that their regular season is
practically over and with the Big East opponents being the toughest
teams in the country. Maybe if the Hoyas were in a different
conference this season they would be considered a good team, but
with all the talent in the Big East this season even some of the
best teams in the country don’t stand a chance against teams in this
conference.
The Villanova Wildcats on the other hand have been playing
exceptional basketball as of late winning nine of their last ten
games including some big wins over the Pittsburgh Panthers and
Marquette Golden Eagles.
Although the Wildcats have flown relatively under the radar in the
best college basketball conference in the country, they are playing
as good as anyone right now and could be looking at pulling off some
upsets in the NCAA tourney.
With upsets not uncommon in the Big East lately Villanova has a good
shot of making something happen in the conference standings if they
can win their final three games of the regular season. Their chances
are slim to non existent that they will be able to top the four top
teams in the Big East, but you never know with college basketball,
anything can and will happen.
Upsets are definitely not uncommon on the college level, but the
chance of the Hoyas getting the best of the Wildcats is extremely
slim to say the least. Villanova did struggle to an 8-20 DePaul in
their last game by only beating them by a two points, but I am
pretty sure the Wildcats have learned from their mistakes and will
be looking to destroy Georgetown on Saturday.
As long as the Wildcats’ top scorers in Dante Cunningham and Scottie
Reynolds play at a high level against the Hoyas, Georgetown could be
in for an embarrassing beat down when they go up against the 12th
ranked Villanova Wildcats this weekend.
