2009 NFL WEEK ONE LINES
Week One NFL lines for the 2009 NFL season are posted below. The lines for week 1 have been available since the end of April and are currently posted at multiple sportsbooks. It's never to early to take a look at the matchups to see where there may be some value. Of course, making a wager on games to be played months from now can be dangerous. Pre season injuries and a host of other situations can occur between now and game time.
But even this far in advance we can already spot some games where there may in fact be some value. For instance, how about the week one Monday Night game, one of two Monday Night games opening week, between the Patriots and the Bills. Does anyone else think that perhaps Tom Brady may be a little rusty after having not taken a snap in a real game for almost a year? The Buffalo Bills will be looking to make an opening day statement with the pressure on to produce winning results. The fans in Buffalo won't settle for mediocrity much longer. Getting a full +7 against division rival New England might be too much to pass up.
How about the San Francisco 49ers +7 over the Super Bowl runner up Arizona Cardinals? Think the Cards will have a target on their backs this year? The 49ers played several close games down the stretch last season, including a 5 point loss to the Cards in November. We think the 49ers will continue to improve under Mike Singletary so what better time to send a message than in Week 1 against a Super Bowl participant?
Speaking of making a statement against a Super Bowl participant, the Titans getting +4.5 on the Thursday Night game to kick off the season at Pittsburgh might be worth a look. Or maybe the Jags getting a touchdown against the likely overrated Colts. After all, the Jags always seem to play the Colts tough.
One need only look at last seasons Week one results to realize upsets will happen. Last year in week one the Patriots were 16 point favorites over the Chiefs but managed to win by just 7. The Chargers were 9 point home favorites over the Panthers and lost outright by 2. The Colts were a hefty 10 point choice over the Bears and they too lost straight up, 29-13.
You can't overlook all the favs though. The Eagles were a 9 point choice over the Rams last year in week one and romped to a 38-3 win. But you can be sure that some of these high priced favorites will fail to deliver in week one, as things aren't always what they seem. Right now, these lines reflect the results of last year and the current expectations. The NFL is a league where you can go from worst to first in one year, so those handicappers that do their homework are sure to take advantage. Here are the Week one lines. Oh, and just in case you really want to get a jump on things, the early Super Bowl line is the AFC -3 over the NFL with a total of 47.5.
