Canes Seek Revenge Over Florida State
Betting Line Favors Noles By 6.5
9/7/09
Revenge is a dish best served cold; but not in this case. Rivals from the
sunny and warm state of Florida are set to do battle. Those two rivals are the
Miami Hurricanes and Florida State Seminoles. Last year’s game resulted in a
thrilling 41-39 finish that went in favor of the ‘Noles. The ‘Canes are out to
extract some sweet revenge on the road. The line stands at -6, with Florida
State as the favorite. This is one game you don’t want to miss.
Starting out the year with a winning record will be very hard for the Miami
Hurricanes. They open the season against four top 25 teams. Starting on the
right foot with a win over Florida State would be a huge step in the right
direction. Coach Randy Shannon believes this won’t be a problem, because he
thinks his program is among the 10 best in the country. I’ll quote a good friend
in response to that; easy cowboy.
Miami has a tough task here, but the talent is there for them to pull off the
upset. They are returning 6 starters on each side of the ball. This is a young
team with a strong defense. Eric Minour at DE and Randy Phillips at SS are two
of the better players on the team. Both were granted sixth year eligibility. QB
Jacory Harris is going to have to step his game up. He played well enough last
year, but this team needs more production from him. Mark Whipple will whip the
offense into shape. He was the QB coach behind Ben Roethlisberger and is
beginning his first year as offensive coordinator with the ‘Canes. Don’t
underestimate the effect he will have on the team.
Christian Ponder has impressed in practice for the Florida State Seminoles, but
they will need him to get it done on the field. That is something he struggled
to do last year. He has a great offensive line protecting him. That line will
also open up possibilities for RB Jermaine Thomas. He is drawing comparisons to
FSU alum Leon Washington. The ‘Noles will rely on him to have a big game in this
event. The WR corps has serious character issues and lacks a playmaker. This
doesn’t bode well, and if Miami shuts them down it will be bad news for Florida
State.
CB Patrick Robinson leads the Seminoles defense. He was named team MVP during
spring drills this year. He is complimented by Jamie Robinson at FS. Both are
good players, but they need to pull down more interceptions this year. That has
been a problem for Florida State in the recent past. Their Turnover Margin was
+0 last season.
It will be interesting to see how the Seminoles handle the run. They don’t have
a dominate DE and the line is nothing special on the whole. Miami RB Graig
Cooper looks set for a big year. If he flies out of the gate it will be bad news
for Florida State. Shutting him down is a must.
Florida State is a solid favorite at -6. The Hurricanes have more to prove after
losing to FSU last year. However, playing on the road may be too much for them
to overcome. I like Florida State to outclass them and pull down a victory to
start the year. The Seminoles are just too classy for Miami. The O/U is
interesting at 48.5. Based off last year’s score I would take the over in this
event. I doubt it will be very hard for them to combine for 48.5 points.
Regardless of which team you bet, this is going to be a great game to watch!
