Notre Dame Double Digit Favorites Over Nevada
Week One College Football Betting
9/5/09
College football is back and the first week of games is full of compelling
and entertaining matchups in which we will see nothing, but great football on
the gridiron!
There are only a few college football teams that stand the test of time in terms
of a crazy fan following and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish is one of those teams
that have a diehard fan base that will follow them no matter how many game they
win or lose. With that crazy following also comes crazy betting. Notre Dame is
one of the most over bet teams in all of college football. As a result, their
lines are often inflated, so great value can be found going against the Irish in
spots.
Currently Notre Dame is Favored by -14.5 at
Sportsbook.com
with a total of 62, up from an opener of 57.5. Apparently bettors aren't looking
for a defensive battle.
This season will be the biggest test for the struggling Fighting Irish and head
coach Charlie Weis who will almost without a doubt be on the hot seat if he
doesn’t lead Notre Dame to a successful season this year. Not that far back the
Fighting Irish were title contenders every single season, but they have had
trouble at the quarterback position ever since Brady Quinn made the jump to the
NFL and honestly their entire game plan hasn’t been all that great. Notre Dame
brought in head coach Charlie Weis from the New England Patriots to change their
fortunes on the gridiron a few years back, but he has yet to get the Irish back
to prominent status in college football.
Even though they are coming off yet another disappointing season at 7-6, the
Fighting Irish look promising this year coming into the year ranked 23rd in the
country which is the first time Notre Dame Fighting Irish have been ranked in
the Top 25 preseason poll in three years.
Fighting Irish quarterback Jimmy Clausen has struggled in years past, mostly due
to offense line problems, but he started to come into his own last season after
having a breakout year by throwing for 3,172 yards, 25 touchdowns , 17
interceptions and could make a huge impact for Notre Dame in the upcoming
season. Expect to see the Fighting Irish season go where Clausen takes it!
The Nevada Wolf Pack on the other hand has a talented quarterback of their own
in last season’s WAC player of the year Colin Kaepernick. Not only is Kaepernick
a very talented quarterback, but he had an NCAA first last season by being the
first to pass for 2,500 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season.
Kaepernick also passed for a combined 39 touchdowns in the air and on the
ground.
So the Wolf Pack do not have a problem on offense with Kaepernick taking the
snaps and two very talented running backs coming out of the backfield in Luke
Lippincott who is fully recovered from a torn ACL and Vai Taua who had 1,567
yards on the ground last season, but they will struggle on the defensive side of
the football this season which will ultimately be the deciding factor in this
game.
Keep an eye on the line here. Notre Dame money has been pouring in all week. If that continuous, and we see this line drift up to 16 or more, we'll make a value play on the Nevada which may even be worth a play right now at +14.5. A play on Nevada in the first quarter, and, or the first half may be worth a shot as well. These kids for Nevada will be pumped beyond belief for what amounts to an opportunity of a lifetime, playing the Irish on National TV. The adrenalin alone should carry them through and keep it close.
