#20 BYU Looks to Upset #3 Oklahoma
9/5/09
The college football season is back and for BYU and Oklahoma it will start
off with a bang as these two teams that are already ranked in the top 25 will
look to make an impression in the polls with a win over a ranked opponent in
their first week of battle on the gridiron.
As I see it, the Oklahoma Sooners have everything to lose in this football game
and the BYU Cougars have everything to win by taking down reigning Heisman
trophy winner quarterback Sam Bradford and arguably one of the best offenses in
college football.
The Cougars were by no means a mediocre team last season as they only lost three
games all season long, but they weren’t able to overcome the Mountain West
Conference best team in Utah that went undefeated for the season.
Quarterback Max Hall will be the player to bring the Cougars back to the promise
land this season, but he will be without his top receivers that brought him to
premier passer status last season. Not only will Hall be without his top offense
targets, but his offense line is a big question mark as well that will be tested
to the max against a very good Oklahoma Sooners defense that will be looking to
exploit the offense line and put Hall on his back for the majority of the
contest.
Unless the Sooners are exposed for their weaknesses early in the game against
BYU I really don’t see there being any chance that the Cougars will pull off the
upset over the third ranked team in the country.
As of right now the Oklahoma Sooners are 22.5 point favorites to win this game
at sportsbook.com and with a potent offense in quarterback Sam Bradford’s hands there will be no
way the Sooners lose this game. If they do somehow lose it will devastate
Oklahoma and you will see a severe drop in the Top 25 rankings.
Regardless of the outcome, this will be an interesting matchup nonetheless
because of its location in Arlington, Texas. Not only will we be witnessing two
high ranked college football heavyweights going head to head in the first week
of competition, but because this game will be played in a neutral location in
the brand new Cowboys Stadium which cost literally billions of dollars.
There has been some controversy involving Dallas Cowboys’ new and extremely
expensive stadium do to the scoreboard which seems to interfere with kick offs
and punts. The scoreboard, which actually is the most expensive part of the
stadium, is within the guidelines and height levels that it is supposed to be,
but still seems to interfere with the game play so it might affect the game to
some degree.
Even though the scoreboard problems remain to be seen in games that actually
matter, the Sooners will start their season off undefeated at 1-0 with a win
over Birmingham Young, but I don’t think they will cover the -22.5 point spread.
