BYU Seeks Revenge Against TCU
Horned Frogs 2.5 Point Favorites
10/24/09
Last year it was TCU who knocked BYU off their BCS Buster path giving them
their first loss of the season. One year later the roles are reversed and its
TCU who is undefeated and BYU who is looking to play BCS spoiler. TCU comes into
this showdown 6-0 and ranked #8 in the country. They have BCS aspirations for
this 2009 season, and if they are going to come true they have got to do what
BYU was unable to do last year, and take care of business in this game.
BYU shocked the world in their opener knocking off then #3 ranked Oklahoma, and
it looked like BYU was on their way to being 2009’s BCS Buster, but then Florida
State came into town, and took it to the Cougars from start to finish and left
with a 54-28 victory. While their BCS dreams took a big hit that does not mean
all is lost this season. They are still playing for a Mountain West Conference
title, and if things fall into place the right way they could find themselves in
a BCS game at the end of the season. If all of that is going to happen they have
go to be able to do what they were unable to achieve last year, and beat TCU.
PRIMETIME MATCHUP
When you think about BYU you think about their powerful offense, and when you
think about TCU you think about their powerful defense, so it’s no secret where
the PRIMETIME MATCHUP is going to take place in this game. This game all comes
down to how BYU QB Max Hall handles this stingy TCU defense. Hall once again is
putting up Heisman type numbers this year. Hall has completed 152/219 of his
passes for 2069 yards and 16 TD’s. In 5 out of BYU’s 7 games Hall has thrown for
over 300 yards. He is completing 69.4% of his passes and averages 9.5 yards per
attempt. The one stat that has been a problem is he had 10 INT so far this year.
This tells us that he has been taking more chances this year than in years past
which is something he cannot afford to do against this Horned Frog defense.
TCU is #2 in the MWC in scoring defense allowing just 14 points per game, and is
#1 in the MWC in total defense giving up just 238 yards per game. If TCU can
continue to play sound defense, and keep this high powered BYU offense on the
sidelines as much as possible then they will continue their path towards a BCS
game, but if QB Max Hall finds his rhythm early on and starts getting things
going early not even TCU’s defense will be enough to stop the Cougars offense
from pointing up points.
THE FINAL VERDICT
This game has gotten a lot more intriguing in the past few years with the
success both programs have had. Both have become legit BCS Busters year in and
year out. Last year we had BYU looking to be the BCS Buster, and TCU played
spoiler, but this year BYU will be looking to play spoiler. This BYU offense
lead by Max Hall puts up a lot of points and a lot of yards, and we are just not
sure that TCU has seen a offense this powerful this year. We expect TCU to be
able to keep it close for a while because of their defense, but in the end QB
Max Hall and company will just be too much for the this Horned Frog defense to
handle. Revenge is sweet. BYU +2.5
