Fake Punt Helps Titans Cover Spread

8/10/09

Did you realize preseason NFL started last night? If not, than you no doubt missed the beautiful fake punt pulled off by the Tennessee Titans and their kicker AJ Trapasso. The fake punt was pulled off early in the 1st quarter with Trapasso taking off  for a 40 yard touchdown run. A touchdown that would help the Titans cover the spread on the game. Well, you covered depending on the point spread you got from your bookmaker. More on that later.

The buzz on the net today surrounding this fake punt is whether or not the Titans should have done it. This football handicapper and fan can answer that question with two words. Hell no! Why tip your hand on one of the very first drives of preseason play? Why tip your hand in preseason at all for that matter. Why not save a beautiful play such as that, for when it counts? Perhaps use it on your first drive of the regular season. You can be sure all Titans opponents will now be on the lookout for fake punts and other trickery from Jeff Fisher and company.

If you missed the Titans fake punt last night you can view it here.

We mentioned above that the fake punt helped the Titans cover the spread. Here's a good example of how smart bettors bet and how important it is to shop for the best odds when betting on the NFL (or any sport for that matter). The line on that game for much of the week was the Titans -2.5. It wasn't until a few hours before the game that 3's starting showing up.

Any professional or sharp bettor that bet on the Titans last night had the Titans -2.5. While any sharp bettor who bet on the Bills last night had the Bills +3. In other words, sharp bettors either won their bets last night, or they pushed. They didn't lose. Meanwhile, you can be sure there were plenty of square bettors that had the Titans -3 or the Bills +2.5. Lots of squares either lost or pushed last night, but didn't win.

That folks, is the difference between sharp, professional betting, and recreational, square betting. In this day and age, there is no reason everyone can't bet like a pro.
