Big 12 Conference Tournament Odds

Preview – Prediction – Current Odds

3/9/10

The Big 12 Conference is unusually strong in basketball this year. They have two teams vying for a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and seven teams with at least 20 wins. Two teams from the Conference were ranked #1 at one point in 2010, and a third was a member of the Top 5. The Big 12 Tournament will have large ramifications on the upcoming NCAA Tournament. While a majority of the Conference is likely to get in, a good showing by many of the teams will serve to improve their seed.

We will post the current odds from top offshore sportsbooks below.

Kansas Jayhawks –  After easily dismissing Kansas State just before the start of this Tournament it’s hard to see anyone knocking them from their perch atop the conference. The Jayhawks have only tasted defeat twice this year. They looked great on the road when they crushed Temple 82-54. That is very impressive when you consider that Temple finished first in a very competitive Atlantic 10 conference. Kansas finished the year with a 15-1 Conference record. Xavier Henry and Sherron Collins combine to Score29.6 PPG for the Jayhawks. Cole Aldrich is important with 11.4 PPG and 9.8 RPG. The big man had a double-double earlier in the year when traveling to Kansas State. He scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The Kansas Jayhawks are a solid favorite to win the Big 12 Tournament and it will take monumental effort someone to beat them.

Kansas State Wildcats – This has been a very solid team all year long. They lost to Kansas in OT at home, but didn’t put up much of a fight when playing at Kansas. Their biggest wins came over Xavier, Baylor, and Texas. The Wildcats are supported offensively by G Denis Clemente. The senior is putting up 16.0 PPG and 4.0 APG. G Jacob Pullen does an even better job. He scores 18.6 PPG. Kansas State is obviously a top notch team, but I have to question their ability to down the giant that is Kansas.

Baylor Bears – This team’s best wins came against Xavier, Arizona State, and Texas. Their top 3 players are all very good. G LAcedarius Dunn is among the best in the nation. He leads the Bears in scoring with 18.8 PPG. G Tweety Carter adds 15.8 PPG and dishes out 6.2 APG. The big man for Baylor is Ekpe Udoh. He is almost averaging a double-double at 13.6 PPG and 9.9 RPG. This team played Kansas and Kansas State close, but lost to both of them. They are a dark horse candidate.

Texas Longhorns – How the mighty have fallen. This team was #1 in the nation after starting 17-0. since then they have been in free fall dropping 7 Games. C Dexter Pittman has been a disappointment so far this year with just 10.5 PPG. The big guy has huge potential but hasn’t lived up to it. G Damion James is freaky good with 17.7 PPG and 10.3 RPG. If Pittman can get motivated the Longhorns could shock everyone and win the Big 12 Tournament.

Texas A&M Aggies – Behind the leadership of senior G Donald Sloan the Aggies have emerged as a contender in the Big 12. They own wins over Clemson, Minnesota, Texas, and Oklahoma State. They had the lead at halftime against Kansas, but fell 59-54. The Aggies will offer huge value and anything can happen during March Madness.

The Big 12 Tournament will likely see favored Kansas take the cake. The Jayhawks are just that good. If they go to sleep they might be had by a hungry team in a “must win” situation, but we don’t see that happening. If you don’t like Kansas we recommend going with Baylor. The Bears seem to be improving.
