East Region Preview
2010 NCAA Basketball Tournament
3/17/10
March Madness has finally arrived and Bettorsworld.com is here to help you fill
out your bracket and make your bets for the Final Four and National
Championship. Many think the team to beat in the East Region of the NCAA
Tournament is the #1 seed Kentucky Wildcats. Others like the #2 seed Big East
Tournament winner West Virginia. One thing is for sure; this is a contentious
region with many contenders. Perhaps a higher seed like Texas or Temple will get
the job done? Only time will tell.
Kentucky Wildcats - This team has been nearly unstoppable. Their
only losses during the regular season came to Tennessee and South Carolina in
SEC play. They dominated the likes of Louisville and UCONN, which isn’t saying
much. Kentucky didn’t really play a great team this year. It’s hard to say how
good they really are. We could see them running through the Tournament or making
an early exit. We will lean towards the latter since they are starting three
freshmen. Experience is very important in the Big Dance. Despite the talent of
John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, and Eric Bledsoe they just don’t have it.
West Virginia Mountaineers - Although they keep winning by narrow
margins, this team is STILL winning. A win is a win whether by 2 or 20 points.
The Mountaineers are entering the Big Dance fresh off a win against Georgetown
in the Big East Tournament Championship Game. F Da’Sean Butler leads the team in
scoring at 17.4 PPG. He is a very clutch shooter. He has hit several game
winning shots in the final seconds of games this year. Coach Bob Huggins knows
how to take a team on a deep Tournament run and he has all the horses to win a
national championship this year. We see them doing very well.
New Mexico Lobos - Yes, this team has the #3 seed. Don’t let their
name fool you. The Lobos finished the regular season with a record of 29-4 and
wins over California, BYU, and Texas A&M. G Darington Hobson is one of the most
balanced players in the NCAA. He picks up 16.2 PPG, 9.2 RPG, and 4.6 APG. He can
literally do it all. Roman Martinez is also pivotal with 13.8 PPG and 6.0 RPG.
If they get hot the sky is the limit. They are very likely to make the Sweet
Sixteen, but after that little is assured.
Wisconsin Badgers - This team is a perennial contender that can
usually fly under the radar. They have nice wins over Duke, Maryland, and Ohio
State. Somehow they managed to drop two games to a marginal Illinois team, and a
less than stellar Minnesota team. They have 4 players averaging 10+ PPG. Senior
G Trevon Hughes leads the Badgers with 15.4 PPG. He dropped a 26 point bomb on
Duke in a 73-69 Wisconsin victory. Standing 6’ 10”, Jon Leuer is a force in the
paint. He picks up 14.8 PPG and 5.8 RPG. We wouldn’t be surprised if this team
fizzled early or made a run to the Elite Eight; or maybe further.
Temple Owls - It’s been a long time since the Owls had a truly
good team, but they have the look of a Cinderella this year with the #5 seed.
Their seed seems like a slap in the face since they finished the year #12 in the
AP Poll. That could work as a motivation factor. Wins for this team include
victories over Siena, Virginia Tech, Seton Hall, Xavier, and Richmond. Junior F
Lavoy Allen is the most important player for the Owls. He puts up 11.5 PPG while
grabbing 10.9 RPG. Very few players average a double-double. If they can survive
a first round upset against Cornell they are a team to be reckoned with.
