Preakness Picks

Exacta – Trifecta – Superfecta

5/15/10

The second jewel of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, has finally arrived. Last year’s event was won by super filly Rachel Alexandra. It was the first of three triumphs over the boys for her. Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird was a fast closing second. Super Saver will be back at work just two weeks after winning the Kentucky Derby. He will seek to continue on his Triple Crown jOurney as the 5-2 ML favorite. The son of Maria’s Mon may get another dream trip under jockey Calvin Borel due to a lack of pace.

There appear to be very few pace runners in this race. If Borel decides he wants the lead he could easily have it. It would be more ideal for him to sit behind a couple of horses, but Borel won’t let anyone get loose on the lead unless it’s him. Paddy O’Prado could be near the front after finishing third in the Derby last out. Illinois Derby second place finisher Yawanna Twist could be close and we expect the jockey to send. Regardless of what happens in the pace department Super Saver should be in pretty could shape.

Super Saver will also handle the sharp turns of Pimlico Racecourse well. Jockey Calvin Borel will give him the best ride possible and trainer todd Pletcher has him looking sharp after a three furlong breeze in :36 2/5 B. Despite those advantage we think it wise to try and play against him. He had too many things go his way in the Kentucky Derby and we aren’t sold on him; yet.

Bettorworld.com’s top selection in the 2010 Preakness Stakes is the Bob Baffert trained Lookin At LUcky. Baffert has taken the race Four times with War Emblem, Real Quiet, Silver Charm, and Point Given. He clearly knows how to win this race. He decided to take off jockey Garrett Gomez in favor of the up and coming Martin Garcia. The 28-year-old Garcia has been working him in the morning and knows he horse well. He should help break ‘LUcky’s streak of bad luck.

Lookin At LUcky has won six races in his career. Five of those races were either Grade 1 or Grade 2 events. He looked extremely sharp in his first start over dirt where he won the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes over Noble’s Promise after clipping heels early in the race. After that he was a troubled third in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby where he was slammed into the rail. The son of Smart Strike was sixth in the Kentucky Derby after being slammed into the rail twice. His luck has been outright awful. If Garcia can navigate a clean trip his chances will improve immensely. He will run through a brick wall to try and win a race. He should be a spot to win if he is good enough. His morning line price is 3-1.

Long shots SChoolyard Dreams, 15-1, and Jackson Bend, 12-1, both have good chances to hit the board. SChoolyard Dreams is working up a STORM for trainer Derek Ryan and jockey Eibar Coa. He finished 4th in the Wood Memorial last out behind Eskendereya and was a desperately close 2nd in the Tampa Bay Derby before that. He is due to run a very big race. Jackson Bend fired a :46 3/5 bullet for Four furlongs on May 10. Trainer Nick Zito feels very strongly about his chances to win the race. Zito also trains Kentucky Derby runner up Ice Box. To recap we like Lookin At LUcky to win at 3-1 with longshots Jackson Bend and SChoolyard Dreams to get a piece.
