Uruguay vs. Ghana
By

7/2/10
If one word can describe some of the results and contenders in the 2010 World
Cup that word would be...surprise. Uruguay and Ghana will battle for a spot in
the semi-finals, and that just mentioned word is really at play here. Ghana made
history when they defeated the United States 2-1, while Uruguay snuck past South
Korea by the same score.
"It's incredible, we've created history, it's the first time that Ghana have
reached the quarter-finals," said Ghana right-back John Pantsil. "We played for
120 minutes and everyone gave his best."
Uruguay is bidding to make it to the final four for the first time since 1970.
Luis Suarez scored twice to propel them into the semi-finals; his second while
sidestepping two defenders in the rain was struck near the penalty area. It was
one of the more memorable goals of the World Cup.
"The truth is, I didn't realize the ball was going to go in," he said.
Diego Forlan and Suarez have become a very formable duo, with each complimenting
the other. Forlan who has scored two goals thus far has been battling a toe
injury, but the injury hasn't stopped him from practicing the last few days.
Look for Diego to give it his all against The Black Stars. For Ghana...Asamoah
Gyan who scored the game winner against the USA team, sprained his ankle
slightly. Gyan said the injury is no factor and he will be ready for Uruguay.
Andre Ayew has played very well for the Stars, showing some real smarts and
touch. Asamoah is the key though, he's extremely fast with a very strong left
leg.
Uruguay has allowed only one goal in their four previous matches. Their defense
is tight and unbending. The question is whether that defense can withstand the
exuberance and energy of the Ghana squad. Uruguay has the experience but Ghana
has the youth and the entire African continent supporting them. The emotion will
be running high on both sides.
Uruguay will come out attacking with Forlan and and Suarez looking to make an
immediate impression. Ghana will refuse to bend, countering back but...there
offensive could be a concern. Even though they have scored at least one goal in
their previous matches...you have to ask yourself if one goal will be enough
against the tough Uruguayans.
Look for Uruguay to exploit a mistake or two and prevail in an extremely
competitive game.
