Tonight we have a very light card in college hoops with only 2 games on the
main board and 5 added games. There is a game that holds some intrigue though,
and that's the game between West Virginia and UCONN.

On to the game.........Perhaps no conference in the
nation illustrates the rigors of college hoops better than the Big East. Within
that conference, perhaps no team illustrates just how thin the margin is between
success and failure, than the UCONN Huskies. In the Big East, there are 16
teams. More than half of those teams can play with any team in the
Nation.
Uconn sits in 11th place out of 16 teams and yet, few teams in the Nation would want to head north to take on the Huskies right now. Despite a down year which saw their coach take a 7 game leave of absence, this team has proved that it can plat with the best. They hung tight at Duke. They lost by 3 to Kentucky. Lost by 3 at Georgetown, beat Texas and more recently won back to back road games with one of those wins coming at Villanova.
In fact, not being able to win on the road all year is why UCONN finds itself on the bubble. They lost close games on the road but a loss is a loss. The fact that they are starting to win on the road now with just 4 games left in the season is what makes things interesting. They have two big home games left, tonight and then Sunday against Louisville before hitting the road for two winnable games to end the season against Notre Dame and South Florida.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. In order for coach Calhoun to be able to get on his soapbox and lobby for the Huskies to make the big dance, they'll have to get by West Virginia tonight. While UCONN has played one of the toughest schedules in the country, it was no tougher than that of West Virginia's. The difference is, West Virginia went 21-5 against that schedule while UCONN went 16-11.
Like UCONN, West Virginia will be looking to prove it can beat a good team on the road. They are 9-3 on the road but their 3 losses came against the best teams they played, Pitt, Syracuse and Purdue. A win over UCONN would be their highest quality road win of the season with their only chance to top that being in their final game of the season at Villanova.
Despite the recent surge by the Huskies, unless they make it to the finals of the Big East tournament it's looking like an NIT year for UCONN. Aside from talent, which both of these teams have, lots of things have to go right for a Big East team to be 21-5 on the year. West Virginia is having one of those years.
We have West Virginia winning this game 70-66. The game opened up at West Virginia -1. At that line we'd consider a small play on West Virginia. But since then, the line has climbed to -3, even -3.5 in one spot. UCONN money will likely drop the line as the game nears, but we aren't interested in laying any points here. West Virginia likely gets the win here but it might be too close for comfort, so we'll watch it from the sidelines.
