Bowling Green Football Preview Predictions and Schedule 2011
The Bowling Green football program reached a low point in 2010. They had their first 10 loss season ever, going 2-10. Over the course of these last decade Bowling Green had only had one losing season, a 4-8 year. Urban Meyer was the head honcho here in 2001 and 2002 when the team won 8 and 9 games. Then in 2003 the team went 11-3 under new coach Gregg Brandon. Current coach Dave Clawson took over in 2009 and went 7-6 with the talent he inherited, but then the wheels fell off last season.
Bowling Green lost some close games. They lost by 2 to Buffalo and by 1 to Temple. They lost by a field goal eventual MAC champ Miami Ohio and they had some close losses to some non division foes. But what's troublesome is their blow out losses to other top MAC teams. They lost to Ohio 49-25, Kent State 30-6, Toledo 33-14 and Western Michigan 41-7. Those losses would suggest Bowling Green is still a ways away. A team generally can't close gaps like that in one year.
But while 2011 may only see moderate improvement, the future looks bright. This team is loaded with young talent and returns 7 starters on each side of the ball including sophomore QB Matt Schillz. They need to fill some holes at running back and receiver as well as the linebacker position on defense but all in all they have 60 scholarship players which are freshman and sophomores (the NCAA allows 85) which means Bowling Green will likely be a force in the MAC once again, very soon.
The goal this year for Bowling Green should be to turn some of those close losses into wins and to narrow the gap between them and the top MAC teams, maybe even pull off a big upset or two along the way. It won't be easy. After a non conference schedule that includes West Virginia and Wyoming and an early MAC contest at Miami Ohio, the Falcons will get all of their MAC foes in a row, Western Michigan, Toledo, Temple, Kent, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Buffalo.
Count on Bowling Green improving their win total in 2011. The way we see it, figure on 4 or 5 wins and a likely big upset along the way. The feeling here is that the team is just too young and the gaps too large to close in one season. The Falcons are on the rise but will have to wait one more year before we pick them to at least become bowl eligible.
From a betting standpoint, look to back Bowling Green against the teams that narrowly beat them the year before. They'll be confident in those games, knowing they can play with them and winning those games will be a major goal for the team this season. Those games are at Buffalo and Miami Ohio and Temple at home.
