California vs. Washington Football Pick with Analysis
The Washington Huskies host the California Golden Bears on Saturday and are currently a small 3 point home favorite with a total of 58. Washington is coming off a 51-38 loss to Nebraska in a game that was 44-17 early in the 4th quarter, all Nebraska, while Cal was playing a tune up game with Presbyterian, winning 63-12.
When you look at the history of the matchups between some conference rivals you can often times find a pattern in the box scores. You might, for example, find historically close games. We'll if you look as the Cal/Washington recent history, it's all over the map. Last year they played a close 16-13 game won by Washington. The year before, Washington drilled Cal 42-10 and the year before that Cal drilled Washington 48-7.
Neither team has been anything to write home about in 2011. Yes, Cal is 3-0, but a scratch the win over Presbyterian last week and you're left with a 36-21 win over Fresno and a 36-33 win over Colorado. Washington has question marks of their own. They squeaked by Eastern Washington 30-27 and beat Hawaii 40-32 before running into the Cornhuskers last week.
For us, Cal is a team to stay away from for now. The last several years have seen some major inconsistency with an inability to string good games together, which as far as we're concerned, is squarely on the shoulders of coach Jeff Tedford. They are off to a nice 3-0 start, but barely, and we just don't trust Cal to not lay an egg this week, based on the past.
Washington meanwhile, looks to be down a notch, which was to be expected with the departure of Locker. If there's a positive to the result of the Nebraska game last week, it's that the Huskies didn't quit. At 44-17, they could have gone through the motions but instead they kept coming.
We're going to lean with the home team Huskies here, but really, for no other reason other than the potential that exists for Cal not showing up, based on the history of the program over the last few years. All things being equal, if both teams come to play, flip a coin. They have both proven to have some success moving the ball and putting points on the board this year. Lean only Washington -3.
