Western Michigan vs. UCONN Pick with Analysis
UCONN hosts Western Michigan Saturday afternoon as the Huskies play one last non conference game before a run of 7 straight Big East games begins. UCONN is a small -2.5 to -3 point home favorite at most online sportsbooks.
The storyline for UCONN football in 2011 has been a defense that ranks in the top 15 in categories such as yards allowed (good against the run) and points allowed, coupled with an offense that has been inept. If there's any good news for the offense it's that it appears at though the 3 QB rotation is coming to an end as Johnny McEntee looks to be the man.
Western Michigan comes in at 2-2 having faced two Big 10 teams in Michigan and Illinois. Michigan beat them 34-10 while things were much closer last week in Illinois, a 23-20 Illini win in a game that Western Michigan led 13-10 at the half.
You can be sure UCONN will spend quite a bit of time looking at the 2nd half of the Illinois game to see if they can figure out how Illinois backs Troy Pollard and Donvan Young were able to rush for 184 yards, 294 total rushing yards for the game. There lies UCONN's game plan. Johnny McEntee, despite being a You Tube sensation, is not going to beat you through he air. UCONN needs to pound the ball and rely on it's defense to put them in position to win games. Also note that Western Michigan had just 35 yards rushing vs. Illinois and does most of it's damage through the air.
If UCONN had an offense, they might be a force in the Big East. While the offense has sputtered, settling on a QB can only help stabilize things. UCONN should be able to keep the Western Michigan offense in check and should also be able to run the ball Saturday. We're going to go ahead and lay the spot here with the Huskies as they move to 3-2. We still see some -2.5's on the board. UCONN -2.5
