2013 Georgia State

College Football

Betting Preview

Schedule and Odds

It won't be a pretty season for Georgia State, that's for sure. The Panthers finished with only one win last year playing against mostly FCS competition. Is it important to mention their only win came against a winless school? Now in the Sun Belt, they'll be playing FBS teams every weekend, excluding a few non-conference foes. To make the learning curve even bigger, they also brought in a new head coach from Indiana State, Trent Miles.

The only positive that you can say about this team is that they have a lot of returning talent. Ben McLane is back at quarterback, but his position is by no means for certain after tossing 11 interceptions and 10 touchdowns a year ago. The offense turned the ball over 35 times as a team in 2012. All five starters are back on the offensive line, with four of them being seniors. Unfortunately, they also struggled last year allowing 28 sacks. Travis Evans and Gerald Howse will fight for the running back position. They do have a couple seniors returning at wide out, with Albert Wilson (48 receptions, 947 yards, seven TDs) leading the way.

Georgia State's defense is in close to the same situation, returning a decent amount of players after a bad year. They allowed close to 40 points and 500 yards per game last year. If they improve at all, it will likely be from the transfers coming in like Nermin Delic out of Kentucky. Still, there's not much to expect from this unit, even against the weaker teams.

2013 Georgia State Football Schedule

Aug. 30 vs. Samford
Sept. 7 vs. Chattanooga
Sept. 14 at West Virginia
Sept. 21 vs. Jacksonville State
Oct. 5 at Alabama
Oct. 12 vs. Troy
Oct. 19 at Texas State
Oct. 26 at LA-Monroe
Nov. 2 vs. Western Kentucky
Nov. 16 vs. LA-Lafayette
Nov. 23 at Arkansas State
Nov. 30 vs. South Alabama

Georgia State's best chances to grab a few wins will be early in the season against FCS competition. Too bad all of those teams finished with winning records last year. They'll need to find some consistency at quarterback if they want to win any of those.

Road games at West Virginia and Alabama are going to be the definition of brutal. They'll be lucky to stay within 40 points in those games. As for Sun Belt play, there will likely only be two games in which they have a shot. They get Texas State on the road in mid-October which doesn't help, but also South Alabama at home in their season finale.

The Panthers will probably end up in last place without a win in the Sun Belt, and maybe without a win overall. Both sides of the ball have to improve if they want to grab a couple wins in their FCS games.
