2013 North Texas
Schedule and Odds
The Mean Green haven't lived up to their name in a while, meaning they haven't had at least six wins since the 2004 season. Now moving to a new conference, it's going to be even more difficult playing a lot of new schools. However, with 17 returning starters and a lot of transfers, North Texas believes they have the depth and skill it takes to make a bowl game this year.

Even though Derek Thompson started all last season at QB, he only finished with 14 TDs and 14 INTs. Thompson will likely get pushed by sophomore Andrew McNulty and transfer Brock Berglund if he doesn't perform. The Mean Green's running game is their most stable spot with leading RBs Brandin Byrd and Antoinne Jimmerson returning. The two combined for 904 rushing yards and nine touchdowns last season. Receivers Darnell Smith and Brelan Chancellor are back, but Texas transfer Darius Terrell could have the biggest impact in the receiving game. North Texas allowed the fewest amount of sacks a year ago and return three starters from that unit.
The defense will hopefully build on last year's somewhat successful campaign allowing 28 points per game. That's actually considered pretty good in comparison to previous seasons. Leading tacklers at linebacker are back in Zachary Orr and Derek Akunne. In addition, the entire secondary returns. In a defensively weak conference, North Texas may be able to win a few games thanks to theirs.

The Mean Green start the season with Idaho, but after that their non-conference schedule is pretty rough. They have to play two of the better teams in the MAC and then at Georgia. Entering their first C-USA game, North Texas will likely only have one win.
It should be helpful that North Texas only plays one of the top teams on the road and that comes in their season finale against Tulsa. Their other three road games areall winnable. They'll get a stretch of three straight home games before that Tulsa game which should help their confidence.
Reaching last year's win total of four isn't a given unless they can win one or two of those road games. They'll need to play their best to come away with home wins against Mid Tennessee and Rice. If the Mean Green can find some consistency at quarterback, they have a chance to pull out some upsets. With decent skill players on offense and enough experience on defense, they'll scare some teams.
