2013 South Alabama

College Football

Betting Preview

Schedule and Odds

South Alabama once again faces an uphill battle after getting only two wins last year. This doesn't come as much surprise though as any team making the transition to the FBS will find its struggles. One of their two wins last year came in a 9-3 defeat of Nicholls State if that says anything about 2012 for them.

The Jaguars are getting back 15 starters which should help, especially at quarterback where Ross Metheny is back for his senior year. Now in his second year under the spread offense, the coaches hope Metheny and company can figure things out and at least score more than 20 points per game. Although it is worth noting that transfer Brandon Bridge is pushing Metheny for the starting spot. Another transfer looks to have the RB job locked down in Jay Jones. The better players on the offense are WR Jereme Jones (seven TDs) and tight end Wes Saxton who are only juniors. Both could factor into all-conference nods if all goes well for them.

The defense gets a new coordinator in Kevin Sherrer so improvement will need to occur. The line is the strength of the unit with three returning starters, but the bigger mark is the amount of seniors projected to be starters. All but one projected starter is a senior, and that lone player is a junior. The experience is there for these guys to build on last year's strengths. The secondary will have to figure things out after giving up numerous big plays a year ago.

2013 South Alabama Football Schedule

Aug. 29 vs. Southern Utah
Sept. 7 at Tulane
Sept. 14 vs. Western Kentucky
Sept. 28 at Tennessee
Oct. 5 at Troy
Oct. 19 vs. Kent State
Oct. 26 at Texas State
Nov. 2 vs. Arkansas State
Nov. 16 at Navy
Nov. 23 vs. LA-Monroe
Nov. 30 at Georgia State
Dec. 7 vs. LA-Lafayette

It will be nice if the Jaguars can grab a win in their opener because it's going to be their easiest game of the year. And even though Tulane only had two wins last year, that doesn't make them an easy opponent for South Alabama. That game is on the road too. More non-conference battles include road games at Tennessee and Navy which could both get pretty ugly.

As for the Sun Belt, things look even more difficult. South Alabama's four home games in conference play are against the top four teams. That means all of their games against the bottom level teams are on the road. That won't help them in the win category. They finished with two wins in 2012 and will find it hard to reach four or even three this season.

The offense will need to be more consistent and the defense has to step up or it's going to be another tough road. Looking at their schedule, three wins is a good prediction for the Jags.
