Schedule and Odds

Bobby Hauck is entering his Fourth season as the Rebels coach and he needs results fast. The team hasn’t been able to surpass two wins in a season yet for a combined 6-32 record under Hauck. If there was a year to increase their win total, this would be it. With 19 returning starters, UNLV has the faintest hope of reaching a bowl Game.

The offense battled injuries and overall inexperience last year, but now have some promise going into 2013. Quarterback Nick Sherry is just a sophomore and has a way to go in his college career. He passed a ton last year, but wasn’t all that efficient. However, for a freshman he wasn’t all that bad. Sherry’s go-to receivers are back in Devante Davis and Marcus Sullivan (combined for 116 receptions) which should help his progress. Also returning is senior running back Tim Cornett who rushed for 1,232 yards last year. If Sherry and the offensive line can stay healthy, the Rebels might not be all that bad. Certainly scoring more than 22 points per Game.

Bobby Hauck brought in his brother Tim Hauck to try and get the defense going. Tim is coming over from a stint with the Cleveland Browns in the NFL. With nine returning starters and some JUCO transfers to help boost the line, there are some pieces to get things started. They lost a number of close Games late last year mainly due to a defense that had trouble stopping anyone.

2013 UNLV Football Schedule

Aug. 29 at Minnesota
Sept. 7 vs. Arizona
Sept. 14 vs. Central Michigan
Sept. 21 vs. Western Illinois
Sept. 28 at New Mexico
Oct. 12 vs. Hawaii
Oct. 19 at Fresno State
Oct. 26 at Nevada
Nov. 2 vs. San Jose State
Nov. 9 vs. Utah State
Nov. 21 at Air Force
Nov. 30 vs. San Diego State

UNLV was really bad on the road last season and will have to figure that end of their Game out to get a couple more wins. A 22-point loss at Colorado State and a 38-point loss to Hawaii late last season were ugly. They start 2013 with a road Game at Minnesota who they lost to in three overtimes last year.

After a tough matchup against a high-powered Arizona team, Four possible wins enter their Schedule. They get Central Michigan, Western Illinois and Hawaii at home with New Mexico being the only road Game in that period who they beat 35-7 last year. If Hauck wants to keep his job, the Rebels need to win all Four of those Games.

From there, hopefully some confidence starts brewing up because they won’t have another easy Game with Fresno State, San Jose State and San Diego State all on the Schedule. If the offense can pick things up, UNLV may be able to squeak in a couple more wins. They won’t be getting to a bowl Game unless their defense improves.
