Ole Miss

vs.

Boise State

Week 1

College Football Pick

8/28/14

Ole Miss and Boise State will tee it up on August 28th in the Georgia Dome in what will be a prime time television affair with an 8pm kickoff. Ole Miss is a -10 point favorite at 5 dimes sportsbook as of this writing several weeks before the Game. The two teams have never met.

Prior to last season, Boise State would have been a no brainer in a spot like this. They have been “giant slayers” when they step up in class over the years against major conferences. In the last 5 years, on opening day, they have beaten Oregon, Virginia Tech and Georgia and gave Michigan State a battle in a 17-13 loss. Then last year, they were outclassed by Washington, 38-6 in a very “un-Boise like” performance. They also lost to BYU and Oregon State by double digits a year ago.

Last seasons results are significant especially since those results were WITH long time coach Chris Pederson. Pederson left Boise for Washington and was replaced by Bryan Harsin. Harsin played for Boise State as a QB in the 90’s and was on the coaching staff for a decade before leaving for Texas for a year and then taking the head coaching job at Arkansas State for a year.

Ole Miss is led by Hugh Freeze who was also the head coach at Arkansas State for one year, before taking over at Ole Miss in 2012.

This could very well be a breakout year for Freeze and the Rebels. Many SEC insiders suggest Ole Miss can win the West and find themselves in the SEC Championship Game this year. Ole Miss was 8-5 a year ago but was in every Game with the exception of Alabama. They knocked off LSU and came within 3 of Johnny Football and the Aggies in a Game Texas A&M won with 1:46 to left to play.

Boise has their work cut out. They will likely suffer some growing pains with Harsin taking over regardless of the fact that he was on the coaching staff for a decade. They faltered by double digits when they stepped up in class last year and here in their opener, this is another big step up in class. Ole Miss returns 9 starters to a solid defensive unit and looks like a contender in the SEC. We’re going to go ahead and lay the big spot in this one as we think Ole Miss is much more talented than Boise. Ole Miss -10
