BYU

vs.

UConn

8/29/14

UConn hosts BYU in the opener for both teams on Friday, August 29th in Connecticut. UConn is a +17 point home underdog as of this writing in early August (at betonline). The Huskies are off a 3-9 season while BYU was 8-5 and appeared in the Fight Hunger Bowl, losing to Washington.

Let’s state the obvious. These two programs are night and day in terms of talent. BYU is a well coached program built to win now and compete with the top 30 teams in the nation while UConn has very little talent and is in the process of rebuilding. Hiring Paul Pasqualoni was a mistake. He wasn’t the right guy at the right time for UConn. It set the program back. Bob Diaco takes over and really has his work cut out for him.

BYU figures to have major edges across the board in this Game, including coaching and QB. QB Taysom Hill is an extremely talented player and could start for many top programs. UConn doesn’t figure to have an answer for Hill and this fast paced offense, especially right out of the gate in week 1. (Though BYU will miss their all time leading receiver, Cody Hoffman)

BYU should win this Game rather easily. They’re likely to wear UConn down in the 2nd half. However, we’re not in the habit of laying -17 points or more in college football. Especially in a Game like this to kick of the year. No margin of victory would surprise us here for BYU. We could see UConn hanging around and losing by a TD or we could see BYU win by 3 TD’s.

That being said, there might be some value playing UConn in the 1st quarter and the first half. UConn doesn’t get many marquee opponents coming to Connecticut. When they do, the crowd and the team show up. I know. I live about 45 minutes from the stadium. Look back to last season. A very poor UConn team took on Michigan and almost pulled the upset as 19 point underdogs. They lost 24-21 on a Wolverine field goal with 4 minutes to play.

In fact, we advised the same 1st quarter, 1st half strategy in that one as you can see from Our Michigan UConn write up from last year. Michigan won the 1st quarter 7-0 but UConn was ahead at halftime 14-7. The reasoning and logic stays the same. The crowd will be pumped. The team will be pumped. National TV Friday night audience. Both teams 0-0. A new beginning. Adrenaline alone can carry a team for a quarter or a half before the talent takes over.

We’ll take UConn + for the 1st quarter and UConn + for the 1st half.
