Wake Forest

Football Betting Preview

with Schedule

Along with new coach Dave Clawson from Bowling Green, comes a rebuild season for Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons finished 4-8 last year (two wins in ACC) and have had a losing record for five straight seasons. With only 10 returning starters projected, the team will be young and implementing new schemes. Needless to say, fans aren’t expecting much from this team.

The offense loses all of its skill position players from a unit that struggled to Scorein the first place at just 18.3 points per Game. Clawson plans on running a multiple offense that tailors to the players on the field. That includes quarterbacks Tyler Cameron and Frank Sousa, who will be battling for the starting spot probably for most of the season. Cameron attempted 24 passes last year and tossed three interceptions in the process, while Sousa played receiver last season.

Senior Orville Reynolds returns to the backfield after playing as a flanker the past two years. The receivers are in the same situation with a lot of new faces set to start. Tyree Harris is the leading returnee (23 receptions, 225 yards) with Jared Crump and transfer E.J. SCott from Virginia. Whoever starts at quarterback will have their hands full. Wake Forest’s offensive line is actually the best part of this group with three returning starters, including freshman All-American Cory Helms.

The defense loses plenty of players too, but they actually weren’t all that bad last year, giving up 24.1 points per Game, and only allowing 30-plus points in two Games (Clemson, Florida State). The unit is also transitioning to a 4-2-5 scheme which is becoming the norm in the ACC. The Deacons will have a completely new defensive line, but still have some upperclassmen to work with, while the back seven looks to be solid.

Wake Forest’s secondary is surprisingly one of the better ones in the conference, with senior CBs Merrill Noel and Kevin Johnson leading the way along with safety Ryan Janvion, who led the team in tackles in 2013 with 95. Linebackers Brandon Chubb and Hunter Williams bring experience to the middle of the field.

Even in a so-called rebuilding season, there will be opportunities for the Demon Deacons to get some Conference wins this year. Home Games against Syracuse, Boston College and Virginia Tech present winnable options, and even a road Game at NC State isn’t overly tough. Once again, Wake Forest should get at least two non-Conference wins, but road Games at UL Monroe and Utah State will be tough.

None of those early season Games will be as easy as perceived, especially with the new faces on this offense. The Deacons won’t be competing for the Atlantic division title anytime soon, but their defense should keep them in plenty of Games and it wouldn’t be surprising if they reached Four or five wins this season.
