Schedule and Odds

Army lost all of its road Games last year and that resulted in a 4-8 overall record. With a lot of new faces on both sides of the ball, the Black Knights have an over/under of 3.5 wins with the over getting most of the money.

The offense may have the biggest issue with their triple-option featuring all new players. A.J. SChurr is expected to be the starting QB, but by no means has the spot locked down. He was still dealing with a shoulder injury in the spring, giving speedy sophomore Ahmad Bradshaw reps at quarterback.

In addition to quarterback, the expected guys out of the backfield are Joe Walker (18 carries), Matt Giachinta (46 carries) and Aaron Kemper (25 carries). Obviously, none of them saw much time last season in backup roles, but they at least saw the field. The Black Knights only attempted 105 passes last year and don’t expect much more this time around. Even with new faces, they’ll stick to the triple-option. The offensive line was a bit beat up in 2014, but they return three starters this year as well as Justin Gilbert, who was a starter back in 2013.

Army’s defense struggled yet again last season allowing 32.9 points per Game and only holding one opponent to less than 21 points. That’s not going to get you many wins, especially if the offense doesn’t surpass 25 points per Game.

The Black Knights have to replace their entire line, but John Volt and Seth Combs looked ready in the spring to make a difference. Jeremy Timpf, last year’s leading tackler, and Andrew King will lead the linebackers, both as juniors. The secondary is the strongest part of the defense with stud Josh Jenkins and senior Chris Carnegie at cornerback. Xavier Moss joins up at safety after playing at wide receiver last year.

Jeff Monken is entering his second season as the team’s head coach and Army will look to improve on last year’s Four-win mark. That’ll start with winning a Game or two on the road and finding some confidence in the Fourth quarter of Games. They travel to UConn and EMU, as well as host Fordham and Wake Forest, all winnable September Games. If they can’t reach at least two wins by October, it could be another rough season as Games against ACC and Big Ten teams start to flood the Schedule.

If the Black Knights can find a consistent quarterback and improve on the defensive line, Four wins is easily within reach. Then again, if the triple-option struggles with new players and the defense plays similar to last season, those wins won’t be easy.
