Odds and Schedule

The expectations aren’t high for South Carolina this season after finishing at 3-5 in Conference play a year ago, even though they still won a bowl Game. The Gamecocks really struggled on the defensive end so Steve Spurrier brought in old friend Jon Hoke to be the coordinator after more than a decade in the NFL as a defensive backs coach. Even if the defense improves some, which is inevitable, the offense loses plenty of talent from 2014.

5 dimes sportsbook has the Gamecocks listed at odds of 120 to 1 to win the National Championship and 26 to 1 to win the SEC (12th choice overall). Also listed at 5 dimes is a line on the September 3rd Game in Charlotte between South Carolina and North Carolina. The Gamecocks are listed as -7.5 point favorites in that Game.

The Gamecocks don’t have a quarterback that’s set in stone (as of the spring), so that will be the first order of business. Connor Mitch is the favorite and he furthered his case in a solid spring Game, but freshman Lorenzo Nunez is going to make a running for the spot once he comes in. Even then, the offense will need to fill some holes. The offensive line loses a couple key guys and will have to build around Brandon Shell. Another worry in the passing Game is the loss of multiple receiving targets. OUtside of Pharoh Cooper, they don’t have much else. At running back, Brandon Wilds and David Williams will split carries with Mike Davis gone.

South Carolina’s offense was solid behind Dylan Thompson last year, but with a new QB and relatively fresh offensive line, there’s no telling what this group will look like. They may have to depend on the running Game early in the season.

The defense will have experienced players to work with, but that’s not saying much from a crew that gave up 6.5 yards per play in the SEC last season. They constantly had trouble getting to the opposing team’s QB as no one had more than two sacks on the defense. Hoke will have to mix and match to find something that works. But guys like JUCO transfer Marquavius Lewis and Darius English will be relied upon. South Carolina’s secondary was often torched last year, but a lot of that had to do with young guys, which means most of them are returning.

The defense should be improved, but a new offense could hold them back.

What makes matters worse for the Gamecocks is their Schedule. They have one of the tougher non-Conference Schedules in the SEC, and their in-Conference matchups aren’t any better. In non-Conference play, they get three difficult matchups with UNC, UCF and Clemson. And then they have to travel to all of the top teams in the SEC East in Georgia, Missouri and Tennessee. Throw in LSU and Texas A&M out of the West, and there’s no reason to see why this team will beat last year’s record. Seven wins may be the max, but reaching a bowl Game may not even be a for sure thing, especially if they don’t get any help from the new quarterback.
