Michigan State

vs.

Maryland

College Football Pick

10/22/16

After Michigan State won at Notre Dame a couple weeks into the season, not many expected the Spartans to loser their next Four, but that’s exactly where we’re at and that number could go higher. Maryland is in a similar situation, but after winning its first Four Games, have gotten gashed in the last two. So the Spartans, on the road, opened as -2.5 point favorites as seen at 5Dimes Sportsbook.

It took a little bit for this line to come out and that’s because Maryland starting quarterback Perry Hills is questionable to play with a shoulder injury. He couldn’t play the last couple Games and the Terps only managed 24 points in those two contests. And while Hills hasn’t been amazing this season, he’s been better than what Tyrrell Pigrome has shown.

LUckily for the Terrapins, they may be playing one of the worst defenses in the Conference as Michigan State just gave up 54 points to Northwestern. There’s haven’t been many positives to take away for MSU in the last couple Games outside of also scoring 40 points against the Wildcats. It’s been a miserable Four-Game stretch and they’ll look to get back on track before playing in-state rival Michigan next weekend.

This meeting last year ended in a 24-7 MSU win, but it’s hard to see that same result happening again. The Spartans may be around 24 points, but it’s hard to see them holding down the Terps to seven. Whether Hills is starting or not, Maryland rolls with a dual-threat quarterback and that will in turn give this Michigan State defense issues as seen throughout the year.

Maybe the bigger question will be if Maryland can move the ball on the ground, whether that’s through Lorenzo Harrison or Ty Johnson. If the Terps can find some holes, that should help in getting the passing Game going against one of the worst third-down defenses in the country.

The other side is a similar situation and Michigan State will likely take the same approach that Minnesota did last week when the Gophers ran for 229 yards and two touchdowns. The Spartans haven’t been consistent this season, but they have able backs in LJ SCott and Gerald Holmes and both could be in for big Games as long as MSU doesn’t fall behind early as has been the case.

As for quarterback, that’s another question for the Spartans. Redshirt freshman Brian Lewerke started last Game, but he was eventually benched for regular starter Tyler O’Connor. He proceeded to find RJ Shelton on multiple bombs to finish with 281 yards and three touchdowns in a half of play.

All signs point to Michigan State getting the win here, especially if Pigrome gets the start at quarterback for Maryland again. But right now, that may not matter with how this Spartans team is playing. They may look better from the outside, but it hasn’t shown up on the field.

The Spartans are 19-8-2 ATS in their last 29 road Games, but haven’t been good this year and have failed to cover in their last Four. The Terrapins have covered in seven straight following a double-digit loss at home, but are just 2-10 ATS in their last 12 home Games vs. a team with a losing road record.
