World Cup

Odds to win

Group F

By: Jason Green

Germany won the last World Cup and while in a tough Group F they have the best odds to win it and they also have the 2nd best odds to win the tournament. Here are the odds to win Group F.

Germany -300

Mexico +550

Sweden +650

South Korea +1600

Germany

Germany not only won the last World Cup, but they dominated qualifying for this one with 10 wins in 10 matches. The squad is loaded up and down with many world-class players with Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos leading the midfield and Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller leading the attack. while there are no glaring weaknesses on the squad and they played some powerhouse teams in friendlies their attack has been less than stellar. The Germans only had one win in their last five friendlies leading up to this summer and that came facing Saudi Arabia. Still in those five matches they did not score more than two goals in any of them, where shut out facing Brazil, and only netted one goal against Austria and Spain. Still, Germany is loaded and set to become the first defending World Cup champion since Brazil did it in back in 1958 and 1962.

Mexico

To say Mexico has been consistent in the last several World Cups would be an understatement. While they have advanced to the knockout stage in the last six tournaments they have lost six straight matches after getting there. The main concern for the team is the midfield while they have a good defense and attack. Tecatito and Hirving Lozano are a couple of young guns and one key player is MF Hector Herrera, who must play well on both sides of the pitch and solidify the middle of the pitch. While on paper Mexico has a good attack they went scoreless in their last four friendlies and Croatia was the toughest team they faced.

Sweden

Sweden is the team that knocked out Italy in European World cup qualifying and they are a very fast-paced squad. Emil Forsberg, Victor Lindelof, Jakob Johansson are some younger players that have to play well, but they may go as far as star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic takes them. He is the veteran of the squad and a world-class goal-scorer, but can the “old man” carry the Swedes to the knockout stage. Even with Ibrahimovic the attack is a concern since the team went scoreless in their last three friendlies.

South Korea

South Korea was not very impressive in qualifying in an easy Asian group and they only won one of their last five friendlies leading up to Russia. Tottenham’s Son Heung-Min leads the attack and is the best player for the team that does not have much world-class talent. Still, the midfield is a good one for the Korean Republic and they have to pounce on counter-attack chances since they are not great at creating scoring chances in the midfield.
