2008 EURO CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2008 Euro Championship takes place Sunday in
Austria as Spain and Germany square off in the
final. Spain is favored to win the championship and
bettors agree so far. Bettors like Spain and over in
early betting action.
Hard to believe that over a month has past since
we penned our first Euro 2008 article and hard to
believe that another edition of the European
championship is at an end.
Upstart Turkey’s journey came to a halt after
they were defeated by Germany 3-2 and the Russians
were soundly beat 3-0 by Spain in the semifinals
setting up a marquee matchup with two elite soccer
nations.
In Austria-Switzerland, the Germans have been on
a bit of a roller coaster ride.
After defeating Poland 2-0 to open up the
tourney, Germany lost 2-1 to the Croatians; barely
beat Austria 1-0 before winning back-to-back
shootouts 3-2 to Portugal and Turkey.
Spain’s Euro 2008 outings were bookended by
blowouts of Russia (4-1 in the opener and, of
course, the 3-0 shutout in the semis) and in between
came wins against Sweden and Greece (both by 2-1)
and a shootout victory over the Italians in the
quarter-finals.
This figures to be a good championship game with
both teams having the ability to score. Spain is a
small favorite at odds of 2.30 (+130).
SPORTSBETTING.COM is offering separate odds
to win with the German side listed at 5-4 (+125) and
the Spanish side at 4-7 (-175).
The betting public has tabbed Spain as their
favorite as well, with the Spanish side receiving
61% of the action coming in.
Total bettors might want to take note that during
this European championship the Over has been a
profitable play, including four of the six in the
quarter and semifinal games going Over the
number—Spain has an Over/Under record of 4-1-0, with
Germany 3-2 and both teams are ranked 1-2 in goals
scored respectively.
The Total has been set at 2.5 for Sunday’s game.
The early action is favoring the Over, with 66% of
all the volume backing three or more goals will be
scored.
SPORTSBETTING.COM is also offering
proposition bets for the final, including top goal
scorer.
The top goal scorer could be up for grabs as
Spanish forward David Villa, who sits atop the
scoring list with 4 goals, left the semifinal match
against Russia with what is being called a “a
muscular problem” and was replaced by substitute
Cesc Fabregas.
Reports indicate that Fabregas could start in
Villa’s place in Sunday’s championship—the Spanish
midfielder has tallied one goal and set up David
Silva’s goal in the semifinal against Russia that
put the team up 3-0.
Germany’s Lukas Podolski could tie or even
overtake the Villa for the goal lead as Podolski
sits with 3 goals and unlike Villa, will definitely
be seeing action on Sunday.
German captain Michael Ballack, forward Miroslav
Klose, midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and Spanish
F Daniel Güiza all have two goals each and could
take the lead with a hat trick but that probably
isn’t likely.
It’s been a great Euro tournament with quite a
few goals and it looks like the championship game
will be a blast with Spain and Germany.
