Street Sense put in his final pre-Kentucky Derby work Tuesday morning at
Churchill Downs by working five furlongs in 1:01. Jockey Calvin Borel was
reportedly "ecstatic" after the work. Trainer Carl Nafzger was also very
pleased. "The work was good. Everybody saw it. He got his first quarter in 26
and picked it on up and galloped out. That's him. If we had slowed him down,
we'd have gone too slow. He wanted to have fun and we let him. We'd have really
messed him up if I had told Calvin ‘now don't let him run down the lane.' He
wants to do this. He loves to do what he is doing.”
"His attitude - that's a big thing,” Nafzger said. “It's up to him now; it has
been all the time. He has brought us here and it is up to him on Saturday. Just
show me some daylight at the head of the lane, and I'll rest my case."
SBG Global
reports that early wagers on the Kentucky Derby are showing that the public
likes Great Hunter + 2000 and Scat Daddy +700 to win it all.
The other possible Kentucky Derby favorite Curlin also had a very nice work that
pleased trainer Steve Asmussen. Curlin, who did not race as a 2-year-old, is
3for3 this year, having won by a combined 28˝ lengths. He won the Arkansas Derby
on April 14 by 10.5 lengths "The horse exudes confidence," Asmussen said. "He
has a great presence about him. With what he's done, he's the same horse whether
people show up to watch him or they don't."
Asmussen's Zanjero and Reporting for Duty also had workouts. It is unlikely that
Reporting for Duty, who ranks 23rd in graded earnings among Derby hopefuls, will
make the field and will probably head to next week's Lone Star Derby, Asmussen
said.
Hard Spun had a super work as well. With Mario Pino aboard, the horse ran five
furlongs in 57 and 3/5 seconds, the fastest of 26 works at that distance. "I'm
ecstatic," Pino said. "He has a tendency to loaf a little bit, so I pushed him a
little more. ... I didn't think he went that fast, and usually I know. I think
there's more in the tank."
