  • ILLINOIS vs Northwestern

    # 20 Illinois 19-5 travel to play Northwestern

    A LOOK AT THE WILDCATS

11-2 at home, NW has played some very
good basketball this year, including a suprising win
    over Michigan State.

    Last 5 games for NW
AT HOME 479% from the field 49% from 3 point
ON THE ROAD 41% from the field 33% from 3 point land

The Cats play a 1-3-1 Zone defense, and a princeton
style of offense, they are a Poor rebounding team
mainly due to the style of defense they play.
(Iowa found a way to beat this zone by nailing 12
    3 pointers last game).

They are excellent at stealing the ball and using
all the shot clock, They will put up a 3 point shot
at anytime even from the locker room.

NW is a poor permiter defensive team ranked
dead last in the big ten.

    A LOOK AT ILLINOIS

Losing 4 road games this year has Illinois scratching
their heads, and they feel this is a critical road
    game for them.

Illinois looked sharp vs Purdue last game spanking
them by 18, the Offense is back, and the defense
held Purdue to its lowest point total of the year.

Illinois leads the Big 10 in 3 point Defense right
at 28%, this will cause NW some problems.

On Offense Illinois must get the ball into the
lane, the mid range jump shot on the short corner
is the weakness of this zone and this plays right
into the big mans game. Tisdale of Illinois should
    have a big night.

On Defense Illinois Mike Tisgale 7-1 must hold his own
down low and not get pushed around by Rowley
    or his european counter part.

Fraizer of Illinois will be placed on stopping NW
moore the cats only real offensive threat.

Illinois struggels with teams that have multiple
quick guards, and NW is not one of these type teams.

In the last 5 times these two teams have played
NW has not scored more than 50 points in the
    last 5 games

    CARPETS PICK

Illinois is tired of losing on the road, they have a
few days to prepare for this 1-3-1 Zone and the
deliberate slow princeton style of offense.

They match up very well vs NW and Carpet
thinks they are just to athletic for the Cats

    ILLINOIS 58 NW 50

    Good Luck to all

    ILLINOIS and Coaching

Illinois uses a rather unique chart to gauge
HARD PLAY, it is called the Matto Chart

It is a not so scientific formula for the coaches
that measures if Illinois is working up
a sweat or earning enough floor burns.

Players get the following points for play

    + 1 Deflections
    +1 Steals
    + 1 Dives
    +1 Loose Balls
    + 2 Charges
    + 2 5 Second Violations caused

In a game that they dont shoot well
this gives them a chance to win the game.

It is used in practice, on the side lines during games
to tell just how hard we are playing.

The Matto Chart is named after former Illinois
guard Matt Heldman who was killed in a car accident
    in 1999.

Matt was Mr HUSTLE on a over achieving 1998
Illinois team that won the big 10 championship

The Standard is 20 points per half-or 40 a game
that is one Matto point per minute, thats a
    pretty tough standard to achieve.

Coach Weber of Illinois has shirts printed that say

    41 Matto points=24 wins=65 teams
(that is 65 teams to the Big Dance)

I thought this was a very interesting way to
track hustle and all around energy of a team
    and player.

Illinois opens up a 2.5 road chalk vs Northwestern

Illinois coach Weber is really focused on stopping
Kevin Coble of the cats, (moore) is already contained
the real threat is Coble. Coach Weber is going
to put guard Fraizer on him even though the the
guy is 6 inches taller than fraizer.

The Coach and I agree it is very hard to hit
a long jump shot with a pit bull in your chest.

Illinois is way over due for a big road win,
and if memory serves me right, if the 3 pointers
are falling for Illinois, NW has no real answer.

The Cats will try to turn this into a slow motion
game, on both ends of the court. Every once in a while
they will push it up the floor on offense, so must
      be ready for that.

A poor rebounding team NW is basically due
to the 1-3-1 defense to spread out.

Illinois is a much better athletic team than
Northwestern, and only one of these teams
will make the dance this year.

The Illini will come to play this game
and NW wont be easy, In the last 5 matchups
NW has never scored more than 50 points.

Illinois will walk out tommorrow and Win
      on the road by 7.

      Good Luck to all

I agree and I am with you on this one.

They really need a road win to help their tourney resume.

Tonight is the perfect chance to get one.

Illinois win straight up and fails to cover the 2

Winning 60-59 with a Gut check style of basketball
            you seldom see,

Down by 15 with 6 mins to play and by 9 with
2 minutes to play Illinois defense clamped down'
on the Cats, out scoring them 17-2 last 5 mins.

It reminded me of the Illinois-Arizona game
NCAA 2005 with Illini trailing by 15 with 4 minutes
to play found a way to find the next level.

Illinois has found that next level as they move
            to 20-5

Next up Indiana at Indy Sunday
