Either someone is playing kick the cat, or it is time to kick off the old ball again!! The last time I was watching sports at 2 AM, the Caps were in quadruple overtime. I’m back to bring back my view on the NFL and I’m not going to waste time explaining the purpose of this column as it enters its second season right now. However, I expect to be angrier than the Hulk, a better sequel than Lara Croft but perhaps with less substance than X-Men 2. (Yes, that’s pretty vapid.)

The best thing about tonight’s game is the number of Redskin players who won’t be in Japan! I can’t help but to think the Bucs are going to mistake this trip as a Pro Bowl flight that is taking the scenic route. If you aren’t expecting to see the Bucs defensive starters, than you should avoid watching the TB offense that may feature Tight End Warren Sapp (ranked ahead of Shockey on most draft boards). He certainly has the mouth of Shannon Sharpe, if not the skills. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this game -- besides listening to the crowd chant “Godzilla” every time the Jets kick a field goal – is the sackability of the quarterbacks. Vinnie is ninety-eight years old, King has the mobility of Godzilla, and Rob “please sack me” Johnson could be poised to set preseason records in this category. In fact, with Sapp on the field for offense, I expect him to get a bit confused and take out his own QB. C'mon Sapp, the guy is right there waiting for you...who can resist?!?

Hall of Fame game features the Packers, and something tells me that Farve might want to take some notes on local driving directions while he is in town. I’ve heard repeatedly that Holmes will play, but expect him to make as much of an appearance in this game as me. I think the Pack tends to be a bit deep so I’ll give them a whimsical nod on this pick’em. I wouldn’t bet Farve’s farm on it, though.

Its been a decent offseason and certainly a couple teams have made moves worthy of our notice. I’m excited by Brees/Boston in San Diego, it’s nice that Vick has a target even if the team figures to face big line numbers all year, and how will those hot young QBs fare against the returning veterans? Warner vs. Bulger. Couch vs Holcomb. And how about those QB experiments? Ramsey in Washington. Plummer in Denver. And now that he is finally with a winning organization...going to the Bank in Arizona? Will Williams, Tomlinson, Holmes, and Portis continue to rule the NFL? Or will Edgerrin or Faulk or a Steeler find their way back to the top?

I have one more comment -- what is the deal with the total lack of Internet Security at some of these sports books??? I had one betting buddy point out to me that a LEADING sports book takes password changes by unsecure email and gives their service people complete access to search through passwords. WTF? Its 2003. Is it just me or is that unbelievably stupid? Hey, sports books are like banks and they need to be secure. Make sure your book is being secure!! That's just being smart.

    Now....Welcome back NFL!

Oh, Rob Johnson is a Redskin??? I must have blocked that out. That is what preseason is for. Not sure what happened to Vinnie, but it was pretty clear he would have helped the Jets.

Gruden -- sending the all out suicide blitz on 3rd-and-11 up by 20-something points? Very tacky.

I really have to wonder how someone in TB looked at the Cardinals and said, "Wow, if we could just get their RBs on our team, that would really solve our rushing problems." Okay, sure Cardinals defense often left the Cards offense in a hole. But really -- I never saw a flash from Thomas Jones in his 3 years there and Pittman has always had limited upside. If this plan works out, I will be shocked. Nonetheless, the Bucs owned the Jets all morning long and that bodes well for their 2nd year under Gruden.
