    Maryland -8.5 Over Northern Illinois

In first looking at this contest there is a lot to like about the Huskies chances to even pull an outright upset in DeKalb, Ill. tonight. (Many moons ago I left too much money in this little town, but I digress.) Ranked teams do not make there way into this part of the world very often. With what appears to be the best team in the Pre-season rankings in MAC, with arguably the most talent and playmakers (IMPACT Player Rankings has NIU # 1 in the MAC) and this conference’s history of pulling off upsets, particularly against Big 10 schools, this could be interesting.

Michael “The Burner” Turner is coming off a sensational season, rushing for nearly 2000 yards. With 4-OL returning the yards will keep on coming. The strength of this team will likely be the defense. With 6 key defensive starters returning, the stop group who finished 2nd in scoring defense in the MAC and only surrendered 3.5 ypr will be dog-gone tough. Let’s not forget that the Terps have a big date next week @Florida State.

The reason this game will go Maryland’s way is very similar to a horse race. When a horse has success running with comparable horses, the owner or trainer will attempt to then race his horse against better competition. This is referred to as “Moving up in class”.
That is exactly what we have here. C .Freidgen has established this program as a Top 20 contender year and year now. Maryland has 9 defensive starters returning that only allowed 3-4 ypr against much stiffer competition. Maryland is 5-1 ATS as a Road Favorite under C. Freidgen, while the Huskies are just 2-10 SU and 3-8 ATS in season openers.

Look for a strong effort from the Huskies, especially early, but just like the classic tale of the tortoise and the hare, these turtles will cover at the finish line by 12 points.
