  • NYJ vs Washington

I have no clue about this game cause I have not seen either one of these teams in the pre-season. So I m asking you guys / gals in the forum.
Give me opinions on the game and why ( I like reasoning ).

Jets have curtis martin, jets I m assuming still have a good defensive front . Vinny is decent.

What exactly do the Redskins have, yeah the radio guys say that this is a big game for them ..but this is a big game for the Jets too because of the loss of their player to the redskins and the injury to Pennington, so why are they (NYJ) the underdog.

    Me no comprende.

P.S. Like I said I have no feeling on either of these two teams at the moment.

Personally, i dont feel strongly to either side of this game. If i had to pick one side i would go with the jets, even though they are missing pennington, they still have some top WR's and of course curtis martin who hopefully will have a strong year. And on washington's side i just dont see alot in ramsey or their running game, not that testerverde is a bargain.

    Should be interesting...

I've looked at this game from many different angles and am actually stuck. I like the Skins defense better than I like the Jets D and I like the Jets offense better than I like the Skins offense. It looks like Spurrier will go with a RB by committee approach, starting Trung Canidate but giving carries to both Ladell Betts and Chad Morton. The starting safeties for tomorrows game are relatively anonymous in free agent Matt Bowen (from Green bay) and Ifeanyi Ohalete (who beat out David Terrell for the spot). Up until Lawyer Milloy signed with Buffalo today, the Skins were hoping to sign and start him.
I have lost a little faith in the Skins D since Marvin Lewis left. The Skins were 5th in the NFL last season in total defense and, had Lewis returned, I would have expected the same. In my opinion, Champ Bailey is a tad overrated. He just doesn't put fear into opposing defensive coordinators like say, Deion or even Charles Woodson. I liken Bailey to Shawn Springs, a ton of upside but perhaps not living up to the expectations set upon them. Another problem with the Skins is that they lost tackles Dan Wilkinson AND Daryl Gardner. They will start Jermaine Haley and Bernard Holsey in their place. If it weren't for Jeremiah Trotter, LaVar Arrington and Bruce Smith, this defense would be a shell of its former self.
With Center Larry Moore hurt with a PCL injury, I don't look to Canidate to have a very good performance. Patrick ramsey had a 71.8% rating last year and I expect the same or less this year. He doesn't look to have picked up much from last year. All in all the Skins have the 10th and 22nd rated wideouts from last season in Coles and Rod Gardner. That should help.
The key for this game is Wayne Chrebet. He needs to step it up and be the #1 receiver that the Jets had in Coles. He was tied for 6th in the NFL with 9 TD's last year. The Jets D gave up 341.5 YPG last season so it is critical that Testaverde move the ball and keep the Skins off of the field. The Jets were +6 in turnovers over the last 10 games last season while in the same span, the Skins were -4.
In the last 7 games, the Jets were 6-1 ATS and 4-1 in their last 5 road games. They are 6-4 as a road dog.
The Skins were 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games, and 4-8 ATS in their last 12 home games. They were 5-5 as home faves.
I like the Jets getting 3 points.
      BUT.......thats just my opinion!!

        Bewildered

The Jets have looked past this game and the coaching staff is not very optimistic. Without CP, the Jets are done. I think they could have done better than Vinny to give them a better chance for the 10 Week run till CP comes back.

Washington wins this game going away in the 3rd.

I'm not too sure if any head coach looks past a season opener on Prime Time national TV.

The Jets have had to scale down the offense for Vinny. They play a much different scheme with Pennington but the one thing you should have going for you with Vinny is that he probably won't lose the game for you. He's steady enough and has been around long enough not to make stupid mistakes. Same can't be said about the other side of the ball for the skins. Skins have a long way to go. Jets +3 looks like the play!

Testaverde, who turns 40 in November, gets the rarest of opportunities -- a second chance at a final curtain call. But it won't be easy. He had only 21 snaps in the preseason and the prevailing thought is he's still not a good fit for offensive coordinator Paul Hackett's West Coast offense.

Hackett says he'll tweak the offense, and one of the biggest changes will likely be a run-first philosophy, at least until Testaverde gets up to speed. Also, Testaverde will probably throw the ball downfield more than Pennington, who tended to go with short and medium-range passes.

But the key to the West Coast offense is a quick drop and fast decision-making off a progression of reads, and Testaverde has struggled with that at times. On the other hand, that is what Pennington does best, surveying the defense and going to his second and third options. That's why he led the NFL in completion percentage (68.9) and quarterback rating (104.2) last season. Both marks were club records.

As a result, many have forecast gloom and doom for the Jets this season, especially with their running game stalling in the preseason. Asking Testaverde to carry the offense with his right arm at this stage of his career may be too much.

"I really never thought about how the end of my career was going to happen," said Testaverde, entering his 17th NFL season. "And I still don't know what's going to happen. And I don't think about it. Will I get hurt? I don't know. Will I be successful? I don't know. Will I throw 25 touchdowns? I don't know. That's the unknown. That's what's great."

Martin, who disagreed with Testaverde's benching last season, thinks the veteran signal-caller still has plenty left in his right arm. And he thinks the time off has helped Testaverde.

"When you have to sit down and watch, there's something that makes you take in more, makes you smarter, makes you see where you made your mistakes," Martin said. "You take key mental notes when you're sitting down watching someone else do it.

"We had a lot of things that we struggled with last year. It just fell on Vinny's shoulders. It wasn't all Vinny's fault. I think this is a good time for him to come back with everything functioning as normal. ... Vinny's arm is still as strong as there is in the NFL. I think Vinny is still a good quarterback and I just hope we can help him be at his best."
