  • Wednesday NHL Play of the Day

5-1 so far on Play of the Days, NHL's been good to me.

Colorado Avalanche -1/2, -135 over Florida Panthers

Colorado's one of the hottest teams in the NHL right now and they've won 8 of their last 10 games going 8-1-1 during that span. Florida on the other hand is really struggling and they've had some injuries to some key players during the past week that their trying and still learning to cope with. The Avalanche are 26-11-7 overall and they are tied with Detroit and Toronto for most points overall in the NHL. Florida is 15-19-10 and are not going to make the playoffs this year. Colorado has the best road record in the NHL with a sparking 12-3-5 record while Florida has a 9-8-5 record at home. The Avalanche are a veteran team that is very well-rounded and they have many star players that can turn a game around such as Joe Sakic, Milan Hejduk, Alex Tanguay, Peter Forsberg, Paul Kariya and Rob Blake while the Panthers are in a rebuilding phase and are made up of mainly youngsters. Florida has no star players except for their goalie Roberto Luongo but he's an amazing goalie and often bails his team out for the many defensive mistakes they make during a game. These teams are going in opposite directions right now and i can't see a young Florida team doing much against a powerhouse offensive team such as Colorado. Colorado's star forwards create a lot of matchup weaknesses for a young Florida team that has trouble defensively and has just lost one of its top defenseman for 6-8 weeks...the loss of Jay Bouwmeester is a big blow to them. The only thing i don't like about this game is that Colorado also plays a game on Thursday so they may choose to start their backup goalie Wednesday against Florida and play their #1 goalie for Thursday's game. Their #1 goalie David Aebischer is 21-9-5 and gives up 2.08 goals a game but their backup goalie Phillippe Sauve is a rookie and has a 5-4-2 record and gives up 2.37 goals a game. I havn't seen much of the backup so i don't have much of an opinion on him but i think they should win this game regardless of who's in net, as long as Sauve at least plays average. Florida's new lineup of players due to injuries took 7 penalties in their last game against St. Louis on Monday and actually managed to kill off all 7 powerplays without giving up a goal but you can bet that won't happen again against Colorado who have the #1 ranked powerplay and score on approximately 25% of their powerplay opportunities, Colorado also has the 2nd best penalty killing in the NHL so they have the best of both world's here. Colorado will make Florida pay on the powerplay if they play another undisciplined game and take such a large amount of penalties. Overall, i think this is a solid situation to have Colorado and i have an "average" wager on them......good luck.

Colorado wins 6-5, what an entertaining game...their stars took control after being down 3-0 as Alex Tanguay scores 3 goals. Colorado's backup goalie did not play well at all but the offense totally bailed him out....5 goals against almost always results in a loss in the NHL.
