A conservative approach to bookmaking has backfired on oddsmakers preparing for Week 1 of the NFL.

Sunday’s game between the Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions initially opened with Seattle as a 3-point favorite before a flood of public action pushed that line up by a field goal. The Seahawks, the defending NFC Champions, are now 6-point road favorites.

“[Seattle –3] was a crazy number to start with and the public have spoken,” says Sportsinteraction’s Anthony Munnelly. “They`re taking the birds for all they can get and giving the books a chasing.”

Favoring the Seahawks by only a field goal is an example of oddsmakers being conservative early in the season says Munnelly, as books attempt to find their feet.

    The Lions can relate.

The three-headed monster coaching staff of Ron Marinelli (head coach), Donnie Henderson (defensive coordinator) and Mike Martz (offensive coordinator) was brought in to once again, help Detroit rebuild. Gone is quarterback Joey Harrington in favor of Jon Kitna. Kitna will run an offense built on pressing opposing defenses that also stretches the field, allowing Martz to use all of his skilled players.

Detroit, the league’s worst team over the past five seasons with a 21-59 record, finished 27th in total offense and 28th in scoring in 2005.

Seattle meanwhile is fresh off its first Super Bowl appearance in team history and boasts reigning league MVP Shaun Alexander. Questions still remain about Darrell Jackson’s knee, and whether the No. 1 wide receiver is ready, but public bettors don’t seemed too concerned.

“People are queuing up for a piece of Seattle action. Everybody fancies a piece,” says Munnelly, who adds most of the action on Seattle has come within the last 24 to 48 hours

Good point..but Detroit is a whole new team this year, they will probably get slaughtered, but the linesmakers may have made a good move here. If we wanted to get picky about lines, the niner`s should be even with Arizona then, considering San Fran dominated the spread in those games.
