  • Red Raiders Sec Preview (Tennessee Vols)

WHAT A MESS!!!!! First the good news; Lane Kiffan is gone. The bad news; Monte Kiffan is gone. Lane Kiffan left the Vols in a mess to say the least. Lack of Discipline all around.

Seems as though junior college transfer Matt Simms will be the starter at the qb. position. While he had impressive numbers at El Camino junior college last year, this is the sec where defense rules the day!!!!

The running back positions are up for grabs with Junior tailback Tauren Poole having the inside track. The offensive line is full of new faces and will be a question mark. The bright spot for the offense is at the wide receiver spots and at tight end. ocker, Gerald Jones lead a talented group of wide outs. At tight end Luke Stocker is back.

The defense was the heart and sole of the Vols last season and will be this one as well. Senior defensive ends Ben Martin and Chris Walker return and both should be a force on the Vols line.

At linebacker La Marcus Thompson and Nick Reveiz lead the way with plenty of talent behind them. The secondary was great last year led by Eric Berry. He has moved on to the Nfl but plenty of talent remains behind with corner Art Evans leading the way. Both kickers are back so special teams shouldn't be a problem.

Overall: Wow it is hard for me to say this but Tennessee may stink this year!!! Too many doubts on the offensive side of the ball and although they will be good, this won't be the Monte Kiffan defense of last year but they will have to carry the load for this Vols team.

Red Raiders Prediction: Tough away games at LSU, Georgia, and South Carolina.... Tough home games with Bama, Florida and non conference Oregon. BEST CASE SCENARIO 7-5; WORST CASE SCENARIO 5-7 which I think is more likely. That being said this Tennessee team is full of tradition and pride. They probably will beat a team that I don't expect them to at home. I like their new coach, but man has he got his work cut out for him!!!

This a TN team that will always find a way to win and lose a game, a good spot bet team at times in the year with the right scenario.

      Red Raider,
Thanks for doing this. I've read all so far. I think 5-7 for the Vols may be the best case scenario. 4 of their first 7 will be against ranked teams. Tradition and pride doesn't work when the talent level is not there.(i.e. Miami) Even though KY has a new coach, I could see them moving ahead of Tenn. this year.

I played for UT under Majors in the late 1970's, so no one on this site KNOWS them better than ME! First of all, I do NOT trust Lawerys to which Dooley is. He got the job based on his Daddy's last name, the coach at the Univ of Houston should have gotten the head coaching spot. Compare his record at Houston with that of Dooley's at La Tech, with that being said, I will roll with him for a while, but I got ma eyes on his azz. What Raider said is pretty much true of TN. Any time they are a BIG Dog 2 Bama or Florida PLAY ON them!

Krichinshy, can't argue with you a bit about the Vols. Funny you should mention the Wildcats, I feel the same way and will be making a write up on the rest of the Sec East in the upcomming days. Pappa, didn't know you were a Vols man. At what position did you play? Thanks for all the positive feedback from all. RR84

Wide receiver, Jimmy Streater (RIP) was the quarterback then.

Cool pappa, I also played receiver but not at the the big time collegiate level. Impressive; I could really catch but just didn't have the speed to make the big time. So congrats from a fellow Sec fan. I like the Vols very much and always pull for the sec behind the TIDE. So good luck to your Vols and I hope they do better than I'm thinking unless it involves the Tide!!!

No arguement from me on that Pappa. Tennessee played balls out against them last year and I expect nothing less from them this year against the Tide!! Also agree it is good to be under the radar. Bama will have everyone giving them their best shot as all did against the Gators last year!!! My Bama write up may supprise many!!!
