RODMAN PULLS PLUG ON ONLINE CASINO
    __Written by: Raj Vishnu
Retired NBA bad boy Dennis Rodman is the latest celebrity to attach his name to an online gambling operation and see it fail.
The Dennis Rodman online casino that opened on the Internet late last year at www.rodmancasino.com has pulled the plug and is now kaput.
No explanation was given by Rodman or the casino for the casino's demise.
Rodman joined ex-pro jocks Bubba Smith, Reggie Jackson and Larry Holmes in selling his name to an online casino and/or sportsbook.
Other celebrities who have also done so are Rodney Dangerfield, Kenny Rogers and Evel Knievel.
The only celebrity casinos/books that remain open are the ones named for Holmes (www.betwiththechamp.com) and Smith (www.bubbascasino.com).
Fuzzy Zoeller has an online casino but unike the other celebrity online bet shops, duffer Zoeller's is for fun, not real money.
In addition, boxing announcer Michael "Let's get ready to rumble!" Buffer recently opened an online casino, but it's debateable whether he qualifies as a celebrity.
Rodman, nicknamed "The Worm," is better known for his off-court antics than for his on-court accomplishments, despite having won several NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls.
Among other things, Rodman kicked a TV cameraman in the groin and had to pay him $100,000, slurred Mormons during an NBA Final vs. the Utah Jazz and was fined by the NBA, had a nine-day marriage to Playboy model Carmen Electra and wore a wedding dress at a book signing, during his colorful NBA tenure.
The casino software for Rodman's Net casino was provided by RTG Software.
According to domain registration records, the website was registered to Doug McAllister of Orange, California.
No information on the website stated where the online casino is located, despite the declaration that the casino was "licensed."
A call to the casino's toll-free customer service line last year was answered in Costa Rica.
AOL WINS ONE: An online casino called Casino AOL and operating at www.casinoaol.com recently opened but has closed down just as quickly.
The casino, which had nothing to do with Internet service provider America Online (AOL), was obviously attempting to scam bettors into thinking the casino was run or endorsed by AOL.
A corporate giant like AOL acts quickly when someone infringes on its trademark, especially a legally murky entity like an online casino.
Four years ago, AOL shut down an online casino called AOL Casino at www.aolcasino.com that was being run by a pirate company in Germany.
ONE BET COVERS SEASON: One of the best ways to bet on the NFL is the over-under wager on how many regular-season wins a team will have.
You make one wager at the start of the season, and then you've automatically got a bet every weekend on your team (either to win or lose, depending on whether you're rooting over or under).
While most Las Vegas sportsbooks used to post over-under win totals for NFL teams, few still do.
That's because it's a bet that can be beaten by knowledgeable NFL followers, and the corporate owners of Vegas books frown on those types of wagers.
Offshore and Internet sportsbooks have no such qualms, however, and thus many offshore/net bookies take over-under action on NFL team wins (college team wins too, something never prevalent in Vegas).
One thing you can be sure about an NFL team at the start of a new season is that it's either going to be better or worse than it was last year.
    It won't be the same.
And if you can figure out in advance who is going to be better and who is going to be worse, you'll make some good money.
So how do the totals look this year?
Here are the over-unders for wins for each NFL team for the 2002 regular season, courtesy of offshore bookmaker Olympic Sports in Jamaica:
    St. Louis Rams...11½
    Green Bay Packers...10½
    Pittsburgh Steelers...10½
    Philadelphia Eagles...10
    San Francisco 49ers...10
    Miami Dolphins... 9½
    Oakland Raiders...9½
    Denver Broncos...9½
    Tampa Bay Buccaneers...9½
    Indianapolis Colts...9
    Tennessee Titans...8½
    Chicago Bears...8½
    Seattle Seahawks...8½
    New England Patriots...8½
    New York Jets...8½
    Washington Redskins...8½
    Cleveland Browns...8½
    Minnesota Vikings...8
    New York Giants...7½
    Atlanta Falcons...7½
    Baltimore Ravens...7½
    Kansas City Chiefs...7½
    New Orleans Saints...7
    Buffalo Bills...7
    Cincinnati Bengals...7
    Jacksonville Jaguars...7
    San Diego Chargers...7
    Arizona Cardinals...6½
    Dallas Cowboys...6½
    Detroit Lions...6
    Carolina Panthers...5½
    Houston Texans...4½
Some interesting situations present themselves with these over-unders.
For example, are the Dallas Cowboys really expected to be worse than the Cleveland Browns?
    Dallas' over-under is 6½, while Cleveland's is 8½.
If you think the Dallas number is too low, you've got yourself an over bet.
If you think the Cleveland number is too high, you've got yourself an under wager.
You might even think the Dallas number is too high or the Cleveland number is too low, and want to bet accordingly.
The conventional wisdom right now among squares and wiseguys alike is that the number for the Buffalo Bills---7---is too low, and that the beleagured Bisons from upstate New York will exceed that total easily in '02.
That's because Buffalo has finally solved it's longstanding QB problem---which it's had since Jim Kelly retired---with the signing of New England Patriot castoff Drew Bledsoe.
Can Bledsoe still bring it, as the Bills hope, or is his career over, as the Pats suspect?
Guess this one right and you've a wager.
And what about the Washington Redskins?
Is ex-FSU head man-turned-'Skins boss Steve Spurrier going to be able to do it his first season?
No one denies his coaching skills, but can he translate those skills from college to the pros?
And more importantly, can he do it his first year?
And most importantly, can the Redskins win more than 8½ games?
    It says here they will.
It also says right here that perennial losers Cincy Bengals won't exceed 7 wins and talent-thin Detroit Lions won't exceed 6.
    You're welcome.
