  • Tuesday MLB...Cards at Phillies

    7.05pm ET
    ST LOUIS (13 - 13) at PHILADELPHIA (11 - 12)
Chris Carpenter (R) vs. Brett Myers (R)

The Phillies open a three-game set against the Cardinals tonight as they look to win their fourth straight series.

Philadelphia won series at the Expos and Cardinals last week before returning home and beating the Diamondbacks in two of three.

Brett Myers heads to the hill for the Phillies and he needs a strong outing tonight to keep his spot in the starting rotation. He has been inconsistent so far this season but does have reasonable career numbers against tonight's opposition. His team has won all four starts against the Cards and Meyers is 1-0 with a 4.03 ERA.

The Cardinals are averaging just 2.9 runs in their last ten games and we expect Meyers to be capable of keeping their offense in check tonight. If he does get into trouble it's worth noting that the Phillies bullpen has allowed 20 less earned runs than the Cardinals this season despite throwing two more innings. Phillies bullpen pitching stats this season include a 2.54 ERA and 1.057 WHIP while the Cards are almost double that at 4.96 ERA and 1.547 WHIP.

The Phillies are scoring 5.3 rpg through their last ten games and tonight face Chris Carpenter who hasn't posted a winning season since 1999. He is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA so far in 2004 including a strong outing against the Phillies Thursday when he allowed only two earned runs through seven innings but didn't figure in the decision. The Cardinals have won just two of Carpenter's last eight starts.

Philadelphia is 10-5 (+6.2 Units) against St Louis over the last three seasons including 4-2 (+2 units) at home. The Phillies took the first two games at Busch Stadium last week before missing a chance at a sweep with a 5-4 loss in 13 innings. We'll go with them to get another win at home tonight.
