Will Joe Torre Get Fired Before the Start of the 2005 MLB Regular Season?

WAGERWEB POSTS ODDS ON: "WILL THE BOSS SHAKE UP THE YANKEES AND FIRE MANAGER JOE TORRE BEFORE THE START OF THE 2005 MLB REGULAR SEASON?"

(Zapote, Costa Rica, 22 OCTOBER 2004)- Coming off one of the most historic collapses in modern sports history and definitely, as far as MLB is concerned, there is, for sure, going to be a shakeup for the New York Yankees during the off-season. It appears that no one is safe and the first likely candidate to go would be manager Joe Torre. The Yankees had a commanding three games to none lead in the ALCS over their arch nemesis Boston Red Sox only to lose the next four straight games and do so for the first time in MLB history.

It appears that four World Series titles and six appearances over the last decade might not be enough to save Torre's job after the Yankees' monumental collapse in this year's postseason. Not only did they become the first team ever to lose a 3-0 lead and then the series, but they lost to the Red Sox. As far as Yankee fans are concerned, there is no team that it would have been worse losing to in that fashion. During the series, Torre was perceived by many to make some very questionable calls, most notably by putting in closer Mariano Rivera in the 8th inning of game 5, with runners on 1st and third and nobody out.

"Torre does have four World Series rings for the Yanks, but the Boss expects nothing less than a title every year and this year's collapse was legendary," said Wagerweb.com CEO Dave Johnson. "You know there will be a shakeup in Gotham and Torre's job is not nearly as safe as it would have been had they not blown the lead they had over the Red Sox, and then went on to lose in the World Series."

This off-season should prove to be a whirlwind of changes for the Yankees. They will reportedly go after current Houston Astros center fielder Carlos Beltran, who has been tearing it up in the postseason, and they also might try to land Randy Johnson. If the Yanks decide to totally retool their team, it would make a lot of sense to go a in a new direction as far as the manager is concerned. They have had a great run, but this might be the end of the Yanks as we have known them for the past decade, and the turnover could very well start with Torre's job.
