  • QB Rotations and starter info for 8/20 NFL games

CLEVELAND - Backup quarterback Doug Johnson sat out the second straight day with soreness in his right throwing shoulder and is doubtful for Saturday's game in Detroit. That means rookie Charlie Frye will come in after Trent Dilfer, who will play into the second quarter, according to coach Romeo Crennel.

DETROIT - The Free Press reports - Mariucci said he would start Joey Harrington at quarterback Saturday but try to get Jeff Garcia some time with the first team. Garcia didn't get any time with the first team in the exhibition opener Friday night against the New York Jets. Mariucci said the coaches planned for the offensive starters to play 15 to 20 snaps. After Harrington led the first two drives, they had played 20. Garcia came out with the second team for the third drive. Will Mariucci put Garcia in earlier or leave the starters in longer? "We'll just see how it goes with the snaps, the drives and how the game's going and that sort of thing," Mariucci said. "But in a perfect world, Joey can play some early, the ones can continue to play, Jeff can jump in there and play with them for a while and then he'll continue with the twos."

GREEN BAY - The Sentinel reports - Brett Favre probably will play well into the second quarter before giving way to Aaron Rodgers. Craig Nall is scheduled to finish.

BUFFALO - The Democrat and Chronicle reports - Losman, who played into the third quarter last weekend, is likely to get just as much work.

JACKSONVILLE - The Jaguars website reports - Del Rio would not offer specific playing-time plans for quarterback Byron Leftwich or the number one offense, opting to make playing-time decisions based on the progress of the game.

TAMPA BAY - The Buccaneers website reports - As he did in last Friday's opener at Tennessee, Gruden is keeping much of his rotation plan under wraps. The idea is to simulate the uncertainties of the regular season, when a bench player can be one play away from a suddenly prominent role.
MIAMI - The Herald reports - The Dolphins will start QB Gus Frerotte and play him for at least a quarter in hopes of having the first-string offense develop consistency.

PITTSBURGH - The Gazette reports - Cowher said he probably will use the same quarterback rotation he employed against the Eagles, with Tommy Maddox replacing Roethlisberger sometime in the second quarter and Batch and St. Pierre playing sometime in the second half. Coach Bill Cowher wants his No. 1 quarterback to get more than the 10 offensive snaps he had in the preseason victory Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles, but he also wants to use the game to take a more extensive look at another quarterback -- veteran Charlie Batch, who is fighting Brian St. Pierre for the No. 3 spot.
The Tribune reports - Cowher plans to use his starters for a half in Saturday's preseason game

OAKLAND - The Chronicle reports - Raiders coach Norv Turner said he expects the team's starting offensive and defensive units to play at least 20-25 plays today, or as much as the entire first half.

HOUSTON - The Chronicle reports - Quarterbacks David Carr (Achilles' tendon) and Tony Banks (hamstring) are listed as probable and Dave Ragone (knee) as questionable for tonight's preseason game against Oakland. Coach Dom Capers said that if Carr plays, it'll be the same as the Denver game in which he played the first two series.

CAROLINA (08/17)The Observer reports - The Carolina Panthers starters will get more playing time in Saturday's game at the New York Giants than they did against Washington last Saturday, coach John Fox said after Wednesday's morning practice. "The plan right now is we'll play the starters into the second quarter or maybe the whole second quarter, depending how the game goes," Fox said. "We have a designed number of plays. So they will play more than they did last week.

NY GIANTS - Manning will start against Carolina and play through the middle or late into the second quarter. Next on the field comes Tim Hasselbeck, and Tom Coughlin stressed he definitely wants to get Jared Lorenzen in the game sometime in the fourth quarter.

PHILADELPHIA - The Eagles website reports - As for the playing rotation, the starters will play the first half, according to Reid.
The Inquirer reports - Quarterback Koy Detmer will get the night off; Mike McMahon will open the second half and Andy Hall will finish.

BALTIMORE - The Post reports - Baltimore's starters will play most of the first half.

CHICAGO - The Sun Times reports - The starters are expected to be in for only 20 to 25 plays tonight against the Indianapolis Colts
"We're going to keep going in pretty much the same pattern we've used," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. That means fans can expect a heavy dose of No. 2 quarterback Kyle Orton beginning in the second quarter, and newcomer Jeff Blake could get some action in the second half, although Smith was noncommittal about whether Blake would play less than a week after signing.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Star reports - Manning is expected to take between 20 and 25 snaps tonight with the No. 1 offense. He likely will face a slightly heavier workload next Saturday at Denver, then make little more than a cameo appearance in the preseason finale Sept. 2 at Cincinnati.
The plan is to play the regulars into the second quarter against the Bears, Dungy said.

SAN FRANCISCO - The quarterback structure will remain the same against the Broncos, with Smith taking the first 20-25 snaps followed by Tim Rattay and Ken Dorsey.

DENVER - Shanahan said Jake Plummer and the first-team offense, which got in for 18 plays in the first preseason game, would have 20 to 25 plays Saturday. Bradlee Van Pelt's second team would finish out the second quarter and probably play all the third. The fourth quarter will go to Matt Mauck and possibly Kanell. ...
