BetonSports shares suspended following indictment from US Dept of Justice UPDATE

LONDON (AFX) - BetonSports PLC, one of the largest US-facing online gaming companies, has requested its shares be suspended from trading on AIM after it received an indictment from the US Department of Justice alleging various criminal acts against multiple defendants including BetonSports and its subsidiaries and chief executive David Carruthers.

Other individuals and corporations were also named in the indictment.

Carruthers was detained late Sunday evening by US federal authorities while changing flights in the US en route from the UK to Costa Rica, sending shares in online gaming stocks tumbling.

In a statement, BetonSports said unsuccessful attempts were made on the board's behalf to contact US officials on Sunday night to 'clarify the position'.

The company has not been able to contact David Carruthers other than through his US Counsel. However, late yesterday evening it obtained a copy of the indictment which was unsealed.

Other than David Carruthers, the other defendants are not involved in the management of BetonSports, the company said.

BetonSports also noted a press release issued by the Department of

Justice last night which indicted 11 people and four companies, including BetonSports, on charges of racketeering, conspiracy and fraud.

The release states that a civil complaint has been filed in a federal court in St Louis to obtain an order requiring BetonSports to stop taking sports bets from the US, and to return money held in wagering accounts to account holders in the US and that a temporary restraining order was issued yesterday.

The release also states that BetonSports founder Gary Kaplan has been charged with twenty felonies. The indictment seeks forfeiture of 4.5 bln usd from Kaplan and the co-defendents, as well as various properties.

A hearing in the civil case has been requested within 10 days. Reference is also made to the FBI issuing letters to four telephone companies, instructing them to stop providing phone service to the Internet sportsbooks and casinos operated by BETonSPORTS.

The company said, to its knowledge, it has not been served with a copy of the terms of the referred temporary restraining order. It added it will make further urgent enquiries with the relevant US officials in the course of today to clarify the position.

In the meantime, BetonSports said it is reviewing with its lawyers the impact of the indictment and considering the 'serious business impact of the temporary restraining order on its business'.

'Given the issues and uncertainties involved, until the review is complete and a fuller announcement

can be made resolving the uncertainties concerning the future of the company, the board has requested the London Stock Exchange to suspend trading in the company's shares,' the company said.
