  • Eliminate the FG! It should not decide a football game!

The FG should be eliminated from the game! It cost the Saints and the Raiders games, and California on Saturday.

It should NOT make the difference between real football players. It is not even a football play! It is a carnival game to determine the winner of a football game! Think about it. It has nothing to do with the rest of the game! There is nothing like it in any sport - a special event that has nothing to do with the rest of the game deciding the game.

The game is about running, passing, blocking and tackling. It is not about and should not be decided by a play that has nothing to do with the game, by a "player" who is not even part of the rest of the game. It is a play that is foreign to the rest of the game. Those goal posts have no purpose in the rest of the game.

It would be more fair to just have the QB try to pass the ball through a tire hanging from the top of the goal posts. A FG is a freak show play executed by a non-football player! Eliminate it. It should not decide who is the better team!

No team should lose to another team just because their soccer kicker is not as good as the other teams' soccer kicker.

Play for TDs or give 3 points for ending a drive inside the 10, 2 for inside the 20 and 1 of for inside the 30. Sound weird? Well it makes more sense than giving points for such a weird play as a FG kick in the middle of a game of heavyweights running, passing, tackling and blocking.

These non-football players and this silly freak show FG kick should not be the difference in a 60 minute rock 'em, sock 'em NFL football game!

You have to step back with some perspective and look at the big picture. We all take FGs for granted as part of the game just because they always have been. I'm just stepping back and saying they make no sense compared to the rest of the game.

In no other sport is there such a critical play that is completely different from the rest of the game and performed by a "special" player who has no role in the rest of the game.

A foul shot is still a regular player shooting the basketball at the rim and backboard. A penalty kick in soccer or ice hockey is still a regular player against the goalie in the net. A pinch hitter in baseball is still facing a pitcher on the mound, trying to hit the ball, not kick it. A tiebreaker in tennis is still a tennis game. They don't kick the ball over the net.

The action in a Football game has NOTHING to do with a guy kicking a ball between two goal posts! It is about running, passing, blocking and tackling.

And then we stop the game, and all the regular players who have been running, passing, blocking and tackling come off the field and we trot on a soccer player for this carnival-like kick through the goal posts to decide who is the better team. You gotta admit, that is weird. Nothing like it in any other sport.

Blocked FGs are great. As a youngster, I vividly remember the Bears blocking Chester Marcol FG attempt, it richocheted back to him and he ran it for the game winning TD in OT in week 1 of the 1980 season.

I still cannot forget Chester hugging the football and crying with the plastic framed lens inside his helmet. That still pisses me off!

If ESPN is smart, that would be one of the highlight flashback for the rivalry tonight.

That's just it Taxman........ESPN is NOT smart.......They've got a bunch of college media majors about half our age running the show that haven't got a clue about journalism and how it works, and that's why the show is "over the top" most always, and nobody knows anything about the game ........They're all just a bunch of highlight film narrators and that's it..........You could actually make a nice living by gathering the majority consensus opinion from these blowhards, and making major wagers on the opposite teams..........Especially the radio airheads.........What a joke.
