Game 2 Notes: Illinois at Arizona State

The Illini Travel Out West to Face the Sun Devils on Saturday Night

# The Illini are looking for their second-straight 2-0 start, something that hasn't happened in back-to-back seasons at Illinois since 2000 and '01.

# The Illini defense held WMU to negative-6 rushing yards, a total that leads the nation after the first weekend of play. It marked the first time Illinois had held an opponent to negative yards rushing since the 1998 home-opener, when Middle Tennessee had negative-9 yards (9/12/98).

# In the last two games combined, the Illini defense has allowed just 12 total rushing yards - 18 against UCLA in the 2011 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl and negative-6 to Western Michigan on Saturday.

The QB for Illinois practiced today and looked a lot better, Coach Beckman will make the decision tomorrow if Nate will start for Illinois.

Illinois will not announce who will start at QB until Saturday. They are keeping it under tight wraps.

Today the QB of Illinois took off the purple color jersey (a no hit jersey) and practiced, He looked about 85%. This tells me to expect Illinois QB to start this game.

Illinois matches up very well with ASU on all sides of the ball.

My only concern is the heat and game time. Very late game for Illinois and the circadian effect is always a possibility, combine that with a 94 degree dry heat temp at kickoff and you can see how intangibles could enter into this game.

The Defense of Illinois is actually pretty good the secondary has taken some hits, but they welcome back 2 stud players for this game and this will help shore up containing the passing game.

Defense wins games.

I have Illinois winning this game straight up if and only if Nathan Sheelhaase starts his 28th consecutive game in the desert.

What if he starts and gets knocked out right away? They don;t want to jeporardize the big 10 schedule for one game.
I am leaning ASU myself for that reason. Line jumped to -4 I saw but I think Dr. Bob is on ASU too.

All signs point to the QB leader of Illinois will start as the spread has grown to +4 vs Arizona State.

The defense of Illinois is for real this year a top 15 defense in the Nation, their goal is to exceed Alabama in defensive numbers.

ASU has lost some good players from last years team, Illinois also lost some players including 4 to the NFL. If there was ever a good time to play the Sun Devils at home this would be it factoring in the last 5 years.

4 points is a gift to receive.

Ben Franklin was misquoted what he actually said was..."In this world no thing can be said to certain, except death and taxes and getting shut out by Illinois"

Still no official word from the ILLINI if Sheelhaase is out although rumors are flying from outside sources that he will not play.

Well it sure looks like Illinois QB will not start tonight.

Illinois does get one break the game time kick off temp should be about 80 degrees, one less thing to worry about.

The two back up QB's for Illinois are very athletic yet inexperienced in real time play, I think they will not move the ball on Arizona state until late in the 4th quarter as the defense of Illinois struggles with constant field advantage to contain.

Illinois is now forced to the ground game, this would have been true under a Ron Zook team, tonight Beckman will keep his backs coming out of the back field catching little dump passes for 3 yards a pop.

I do look for Otoole the back QB to air it out some, he is a great passer north to south but catch him in the flats side line its always a problem.

Defense wins games and Illinois has a solid defense, it is this reason only I still say take Illinois and the 4 points.

While it may seem like a homer call to some, I call it only as I see it.
