  • Proposed Rule Amended to Pro Football Game of the Week

I would like propose an amended rule change to the Pro Football Game of the Week:

During the week and after the lines were posted, Andrew Luck became questionable and then about 90 minutes before kickoff, he was ruled OUT for the game.

The Las Vegas point spread for the Jaguars/Colts game Saturday night was Colts -9 and O/U 48. Sunday morning, when the sportsbook opened at 7, the game was OFF as they were waiting on if Luck would play. Once it was determined he was OUT, the game reopened at Colts -4 and O/U 43. All the parlay cards had this game as OFF immediately when the Sportsbook opened Sunday. (I know this for a fact, I've been out here for 2 weeks on a project).

There were 3 players that knowingly took advantage of the 'spirit' of the contest and either took Jaguars +10 or the under 48.

It rarely happens, however, this is blatantly obvious as you would look through the posts.

New proposed rule, if a QB or another issue (weather, ie, heavy rain, heavy snow, etc.) moves the point spread and/or over/under 4 points or more from the originally posted numbers, the game automatically is OFF and another game must be posted.

I open this thread to comments/suggestions. A majority vote of the 32 players is required for this to be an amended rule effective immediately. At least 17 votes will be required in favor of the rule.

Consider this the 'cherry picking rule'

As one of the infamous 3, I agree with this proposed rule change.

The College GOW Contest also has many games that move quite a bit. Not too many sides that move 4 points, but a few move 2 and 3, and always quite a few totals that do.

FWIW, Jacksonville covered the adjusted spread of +4.

Hey Tax.... not to open a can of worms.... I work sundays(TY Amazon for making us deliver sundays So would not be able to repost that late, if my game was taken off the board. Could go to mock Hilton rules, post my midnite Saturday? Otherwise I guess I would have to vote, leave rules as are. Very interesting predicament tho. Thank you for your diligence in running this contest my man!

Great point, that I actually like better.

Why not do it just like the sportsbook. When the new line goes up that is at least more than 3 points off ONLY with a LATE change at QB, if you post after the QB change is official, you get the current odds at the Sportsbook. When a new line is posted late, there is very little movement, say 1/2 to 1 point.

Some might have second thoughts of taking Jacksonville at the actual +4 instead of +10. Not that easy to pull the trigger then!

I'm just trying to keep the contest on a level playing field for all.

Taxman, There were also the 2 guys who took the line move on SD/Cleve which went from -8 to -4 or 4 1/2. So thats 5 guys. My vote would be to go to the Mock Hilton rule. All picks by midnite Saturday. I am in another contest where the picks have to be in by thursday at 5:00. I think you would create too much for you with proposed change. So again my choice would be the Mock Hilton rule or leave it the same.
Thanks for work u do Taxman

The Browns/Chargers game was strictly line movement based on wagers, not a change at QB of Rivers or McCown, as they were both scheduled starters.

The issue at hand is only when a starting QB does not start, sort of like when a starting pitcher in the MLB is scratched, the line will almost always change.

point well taken. So the only change i would be in favor of would be go to the Mock Hilton rule( midnite sat.) otherwise i vote no on proposed change.

                thanks again

What happens if the line changes an hour or two before the game? Many of us might not be at our computer and have an opportunity to make a different selection at the last minute, or even know the line has changed.

I say either make the selection midnight Saturday as suggested above or leave the rules as they are now.

I see the points above but these are lines used for everyone in the contest. I think everyone looks for an edge; whether it is an injury, smart money or weather concerns.

I took the Indy/Jax game under the total but I don't feel guilty about it because it came in well under the adjusted line of 43. BTW, Jax covered the smaller number as well and the total movement didn't affect anything either (there was no middling)
I am one of those cappers that monitors line movements(as many know, my strength is over/unders) and I do look at line moves, injuries, smart money betting, weather, wind, etc. all the time before game times.

I think that once the lines are posted, they stay. This is a basic contest and these existing rules have been consistent for a very long time. If there is a perceived "gift" because the line moved, then buyer beware (that's why they play the games)

                    Just my 2 cents worth.

May all your picks be winners,
                    Steve

in all reality how often does this really happen? Once or twice in a season. I say leave it as it is, next time it could just
as well go the other way on a line change that why it's called gambling!!

I bet Jacksonville on the Moneyline, can't say with absolute certainty I'd have taken them as my Play here at +4, would have to be in that spot to know but at +9 or 10 thats the play I saw the greatest value in. I understand what you mean about the spirit of the contest though. With what Oldluds brought to the discussion about a player needing to get their picks in early in the week, being limited in ability to come back and edit those if a QB is scratched and OCK's very good question about what happens if there is a late dramatic line change I don't personally find an answer to this question jumping out at me as obviously the way to go. I don't see any obvious solution. I'll be content with whatever is decided though, as I have confidence in the deciders and just want what the group decides is best for the contest.

I disagree. Rules should not be changed in season. This is a fixed line contest, and whatever line is posted should be the line used for the contest. If some take advantage, so be it, but they could also lose. If next year you want to change the posting time, I'd be for that, but not this year.

Which did happen two times last season. That Snow Game that got moved to DET? BUF vs. NYJ? Stale Line of several points in favor of NYJ, guys took NYJ in Contest and Lost. October game between MIN & DET? The AP officially kicked out for the season game? Stale line, several points in favor of MINNY. Don't know for sure that guys took Minny there but they lost. I wasn't even sure what the line was when I played JAX in contest, I knew it was lower of course but I have no confidence in Colts right now, I suspect Luck's arm is more hurt than we're being told and that its been ungood all year....what'd he have 4 or 5 INTs vs. NYJ two weeks back? He was sailing the ball, what you see when shoulder is hurt...just felt the need to chime in with the reality that, yes, while winning with Stale Line is aggravating to some and if you go back & check I'd not be surprised at if a guy finished 1 win out of the money due to having back NYJ last year on that Stale Line.
